Google Play's End of Summer Sale outed by discounted apps, lets the Lorax speak for the savings

Google Play's End of Summer Sale outed by discounted app descriptions, lets the Lorax speak for the savings

It looks like a handful of select apps have outed Mountain View's Labor day plans: Google Play's End of Summer Sale. SwiftKey 3, The Lorax -- Dr. Seuss, Square Enix's Crystal Defenders, and other apps are now brandishing deep discounts, almost uniformly attributing the savings to the End of Summer Sale. Not every title on discount claims to be part of the unannounced event, however -- Max Payne Mobile slashed its price by 67 percent without so much as a hint at the alleged festivities. Google hasn't made the event official just yet, but we'd be willing to wager the deals will run through the holiday weekend. Check out the source link below to start making the most of your Google gift cards.

Update: Google's made the sale official, featuring 18 discounted apps for your shopping pleasure. Check out the official list of sale items at the updated source link below, but don't limit yourself: Max Payne Mobile and a handful of other deeply discounted games aren't on it.

Samsung announces EK-GC100 Galaxy Camera with Android Jelly Bean, massive 4.8-inch display, 21x zoom, WiFi and 4G connectivity (hands-on)

Samsung announces EKGC100 Galaxy Camera with Android Jelly Bean, massive 48inch display, 21x zoom, WiFi and 4G connectivity handson video

During a visit to Samsung's headquarters in Korea earlier this year, we had a chance to talk shop with company execs. The electronics maker's existing mirrorless and point-and-shoot lineups were the primary topic of discussion, but we did catch wind of a Galaxy product possibly to come, from the camera division. A Galaxy camera? That could only mean Android, and a heavy heaping of touch and connectivity. At the time, reps admitted only that they were "considering" such a device, and declined to provide any hint as to design or functionality. And we haven't heard a further peep, until today. As you may have gathered from recent rumors, Samsung's Galaxy Note II is not the only product to be Unpacked this afternoon. Sure enough, the anticipated Galaxy Camera is also on order, and we have all the juicy details just past the break.

Judge To Hear Motions On Samsung Phone Ban ... - Business Insider

The case between Apple and Samsung isn't over yet.

There are still a series of post-trial hearings to go through, and the most important one will take place on December 6, reports All Things D.

That's when Judge Lucy Koh will hear motions from Apple requesting a ban of eight Samsung smartphones that Apple thinks violates its patents based on the jury's decision last week. Samsung will also have a chance to request the jury's decision be thrown out.

As we noted Monday, most of the Samsung phones Apple wants to ban are a year or more older. Many are variants of Samsung's flagship phone from last year, the Galaxy S II. By the time Koh hears the motions on December 6, the devices will be at least a year and a half old. It's also possible carriers will have already removed them from their lineup by then.

Death, Explained

Writer Christopher Hitchens participates in a panel discussion. Christopher Hitchens speaks at an event in 2004.

Before being diagnosed with esophageal cancer, Christopher Hitchens wrote in his memoir, Hitch-22, ?I want to stare death in the eye.? This seems, of course, an impossible blustery task, but in his last book, Mortality he comes astonishingly close to pulling it off.

One of the many remarkable things about this remarkable collection of observations about what he calls ?living dyingly? is that Hitchens doesn?t resort to charismatic English humor as a way of deflecting the difficulty of his subject?which is not to say that he is never funny or that there aren?t flashes of his characteristic wit throughout, but rather that he doesn?t allow irony or humor to overtake the truth-telling that is his real business here. He does not use his considerable comic gift as a way of not facing or not examining or not describing, which itself is part of the courage that the book both documents and enacts.

If he were here, Hitchens would object to the idea of courage. He says that the word courage should be reserved for voluntary situations, for things you willingly do: He rightfully points out that he has no choice about the things people are calling him brave for.

What is powerful about this book is that Hitchens is doing a close reading of death; he is examining its language, critiquing its clich?s. One of the ones he takes on most bitingly and effectively is the idea that ?whatever doesn?t kill me makes me stronger.? He elaborately describes his disillusion with the axiom, usually attributed to Nietzsche, with relish: ?In the brute physical world, and the one encompassed by medicine, there are all too many things that could kill you, don?t kill you, and then leave you considerably weaker.? He describes instead a world in which ?each debilitation builds on its predecessor and becomes one cumulative misery with only one possible outcome.? What he undertakes here is a Sontagian task, but he does it with a journalist?s plainness, a disarming candor and immediacy. ?

The book?s power lies in its simplicity, in its straightforward, intelligent documenting, its startling refusal of showiness or melodrama or grandeur. This is highly unusual in a death memoir. (I love, for instance, Harold Brodkey?s This Wild Darkness, about his death from AIDS, but one can?t make the argument that he refused melodrama or grandeur.) In Mortality, Hitchens is using himself as a way of writing about death; he is not using death as a way of writing about himself.

He writes about the loss of his voice with the same fascination, and precision, that he would bring to another subject. He talks directly about his sense of loss, without getting lost in it. He writes about a time when he was upset about missing a niece?s wedding in England, and a friend suggests what is really upsetting him is the fear he will never see England again.

As it happens he was exactly right to ask, and it had been precisely that which had been bothering me, but I was unreasonably shocked by his bluntness. I?ll do the facing of hard facts, thanks. Don?t you be doing it too. And yet I had absolutely invited the questions. Telling someone else, with deliberate realism, that once I?d had a few more scans and treatments I might be told by the doctors that things from now on could be mainly a matter of ?management? I again had the wind knocked out of me when she said, ?Yes I suppose a time comes when you have to consider letting go.? How true, and how crisp a summary of what I had just said myself. But again there was the unreasonable urge to have a kind of monopoly on, or a sort of veto over, what was actually sayable.

Here and elsewhere, Hitchens does not allow himself the intellectual indulgence or sloppiness of self-pity or grandiosity. (He says, for instance, after his diagnosis, ?to the dumb question ?why me?? the cosmos barely bothers to return the reply: ?why not?? ? )

Hitchens writes frankly about the realization that charm, the imposition of personality, is of no use in the relentlessly physical matter of pain and treatment. He describes a time when someone is trying but failing to very painfully insert a blood catheter in his arm. He had previously thought it was helpful to be encouraging and scrappy, to offer a performance of bravado for the needle inserter: ?From this time on, it seemed absurd to affect the idea that this bluffing on my part was making me stronger, or making other people perform more strongly or cheerfully either. Whatever view one takes of the outcome being affected by morale, it seems certain that the realm of illusion must be escaped before anything else.? ?This, one imagines, is what he must have meant by ?staring at death.?

The great polemicist, essayist, conversationalist, provocateur, arguer, has done something extraordinary in this book. He has created yet another style, another mode, another way of being and thinking and dreaming, on his death bed; he has written in many ways an un-Hitchens-like book, eluding proclamations, resolutions, mastery, wit, at-easeness with opinion,? in favor of unnerving directness, of harrowing documentation. He has allowed his dismantled confidence, his undoing to breathe, and to live in the pages, in a way that is startling and new and an achievement unlike his others, different in kind, yet equally ambitious and relentlessly honest.

The last section, which is made up of notes, scrawlings, and half-formed thoughts, is the saddest, as one feels very tangibly and painfully the lack of Hitchens, the pulling together of his inimitable sensibility, the work yet to be done.

Also in Slate, read the afterword to Mortality written by Hitchens? widow, Carol Blue; read the ?unpublished jottings? included in the book (and annotated here by Slate Editor David Plotz); and view pictures from his wedding, travels, and family life.

Turkish military is key factor in Syria planning

ISTANBUL (AP) ? In 2003, Turkey barred U.S. forces from opening a northern front in the war against Iraq in a stunning rebuff to Washington that raised questions about whether the politically powerful Turkish military had undercut a civilian-led initiative to help the Americans. As Turkey and its allies mull possible intervention in Syria, the Turkish military, broken as a political force, is likely to move in step with the civilian commanders it once viewed with disdain.

Questions about the military of NATO member Turkey are critical to international debate about how to handle Syria, now locked in civil war, because any move by an allied coalition to impose a no-fly zone or a buffer zone to protect displaced Syrians from attack by regime forces would rely heavily on troops in Turkey, which shares a long border with Syria. Such intervention with a U.N. mandate does not appear imminent, but Turkey, which hosts about 80,000 Syrian refugees, says it is approaching the limit of its capacity to provide shelter on its side of the border.

Turkey is also concerned that Kurdish militants are taking advantage of the chaos in Syria to organize there, deepening a threat to national security for Turkish officials who blamed a deadly bombing near the Syrian border on Aug. 20 on the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK. In such a fragile context, the Turkish government and the military, which once sparred openly over the direction of the country, need each other and have forged a means of cohabitation ? with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as the boss ? amid the traditional mistrust.

"What's really exited the scene in terms of civilian-military relations is that sense of hostility," said Soner Cagaptay, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. "That's really new."

He said the two sides listen to each other in a way that they did not before, and speculated that the military could be "putting mild breaks" on the government in terms of what may be militarily feasible if the moment for intervention comes. Turkey's decision to open its borders to refugees, while lauded on humanitarian grounds, has drawn some criticism from some opposition figures who say authorities can no longer thoroughly monitor whether militants are operating in the area.

Hundreds of active and retired military officers are in jail on charges of plotting to overthrow the democratically elected government, which is led by pious Muslims suspected by opponents of seeking to dilute secular ideals imposed by Turkey's national founder, former army officer Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The arrests raised concerns about morale in the mostly conscript force as well as its effectiveness as a fighting force, but the new military commander, Gen. Necdet Ozel, is regarded as a cooperative professional untainted by alleged links to military coups over the decades.

The relationship was tense in 2003, when Turkey's parliament rejected a resolution that would have allowed American forces to invade Iraq from Turkish land in the campaign against dictator Saddam Hussein. Newly elected Erdogan had backed the resolution despite its unpopularity, while the military ? still a big factor in Turkish politics ? did not robustly support it, a factor that some analysts cited as contributing to its failure.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was in Istanbul earlier this month as part of efforts to coordinate Syria policy with Turkey, which supports the Syrian opposition and acts as a conduit for supplies to anti-Assad groups. Senior diplomatic, military and intelligence officials from both sides met last week to go over detailed operational plans for "the full range of contingencies," according to the U.S. State Department.

Turkey and its allies are averse to intervening in Syria because of fears it could ignite a wider conflict, though Turkish government rhetoric against Syria has been among the harshest, notably after the deaths of two Turkish pilots whose jet was shot down when Syria claimed the plane was violating its airspace. Turkey disputes Syria's claims, and the Turkish military continues its investigation.

In the wake of that incident, Cagaptay said, Turkey may have "slowed down its rhetorical response" at the urging of the U.S., "realizing that it could be left alone in a conflict situation against the Assad regime."

Henri Barkey, a Turkey analyst at Lehigh University in the United States, said the Turkish military "would not mind doing something heroically and therefore cleanse their image," but he noted that it is already burdened by a low-level war with Kurdish rebels who seek self-rule. That conflict has dragged on since the 1980s without a clear result, and there are questions about whether Turkey can handle the threat from Syrian forces armed with jets and tanks, even if they are overstretched with their fight against the Syrian insurgency.

Additionally, there is no public clamor in Turkey for intervention in Syria, and a general aversion to casualties, particularly when it comes to the idea of Turkish soldiers dying to protect Syrian civilians. Turkey, Barkey said, has yet to find a strong enough justification to go into Syria without the participation of a multilateral or U.N.-sanctioned force, and its military, stripped of political clout, is on board with that cautious perspective.

"They are now subservient to the civilians and there's a very funny way in which Erdogan is now emerging as a protector of the military," he said. In this new scenario, according to Barkey, the prime minister views the military "no longer as a potential opponent but rather a child in his ward."

Against the backdrop of worries over intervention in Syria, the Istanbul funeral this month for Ozkan Atesli, a Turkish soldier killed by alleged Kurdish rebels in an attack on a military vehicle, reflected the national sense of exhaustion and bitterness at the seemingly open-ended conflict that has afflicted Turkey for so long.

Egeman Bagis, a government minister, arrived at a mosque to pay his respects at the ceremony. According to video posted by the Hurriyet Daily News newspaper, a distraught woman interrupts: "We are in great pain. We feel like revolting."

"This is a place to pray, not to revolt," Bagis says. "Ozkan needs our prayers now."

To the RNC, the Tea Parties are Pets- to be Leashed ? North Texas ...

Sorry, we don?t take to the leash well.? And we haven?t had our shots.

The RNC is trying to fully dictate the direction and every aspect of the convention in Tampa- as some of us knew they would.? This includes changing the actual rules of the convention at the last minute. this, after discounting some delegates by an after-the-fact requirement change (Paul delegates), changing the allocation in Michigan (Santorum delegate), And innumerable little shenanigans pulled across the nation.? Most of this was done to minimize the DISRUPTIVE element of the Ron Paul supporters (most are far less disruptive and very interested in becoming part of the process. We were proud to support their representation in our Congressional delegation at an appropriate level) .? However, now the Republican ?Powers that Be? have decided the states can no longer be trusted to pick delegates.? Excuse us: states picking delegates is the REPUBLIC expression that our very country was founded on; you do away with that, and you are declaring open war on the grassroots.

How bad is it?? John Sununu literally went into hiding rather than accept the ?by-the-rules? minority reports put together to allow a floor vote on this dictatorial power grab.? If, based on this, the chair refuses to even ALLOW a vote on the minority reports (because they weren?t delivered in a timely fashion), we of the North Texas Tea Party request that ALL Republic-loving delegates, in the Texas delegate and elsewhere, stage a convention walkout.?

UPDATE: This Monday morning, we?ve heard they are trying to armtwist enough names off of the Minority Report AFTER the fact, to not submit it to a vote.? After trying to change the rules to where you need 40% to get a minority report.? Again, if this does NOT go to a vote of the convention, we ask ALL Patriots who love our Republic form of governance to walk out on the convention.

Update 2: As usual, Texas is taking the lead to retain the current rules, with massive support for the Minority report. Other states are coming to TX and asking why we?re picking fights; why can?t we just get along?? My answer: WE aren?t picking this fight; the RNC is by CHANGING THE RULES!? But we in Texas do FINISH fights, as they are about to find out. any other states willing to give up their rights to pick their own delegates are not interested in representing their people.

Republic rule of the Republican Party Matters!?

Keep it up RNC elitists.? You pull off stunts like this and many of us in the Tea Party groups may plan to have serious, formal discussions with the Libertarian Party.? Are they deliberately trying to encourage and promote a third party effort??

Eleven corpses turn up along highway in southwestern Mexico

ACAPULCO, Mexico (Reuters) - Eleven corpses showing signs of torture and execution-style gunshot wounds were found in southwest Mexico on Sunday, according to local authorities.

Ricardo Monreal, an official with the Guerrero state prosecutor's office, told Reuters the bodies were recovered in three different locations along the coastal highway northwest of the Pacific resort city of Acapulco.

He declined to confirm which cartel is believed to be responsible for the grisly discovery, but local media reported that two "narco messages" signed by the Knights Templar cartel were found alongside the bodies.

The Knights Templar cartel, based in Michoacan state north of Guerrero, is the most bizarre cult-like group to have emerged since President Felipe Calderon declared war against Mexico's drug cartels in 2006.

The conflict has triggered a series of turf wars that have claimed more than 55,000 lives.

Propaganda from the Knights Templar cartel blends a mix of Michoacan regionalism, Christianity and revolutionary slogans.

The cartel is one of the biggest traffickers of crystal meth to the United States and has an army of around 1,200 gunmen, according to a report by Mexico's military intelligence.

It is blamed for the worst attack on a multinational company in Mexico in recent years.

In May, assailants torched more than 30 trucks and two Michoacan warehouses belonging to PepsiCo's Sabritas, a leading potato chip brand.

Katy Perry Reportedly Turned Down $20 Million American Idol Deal

The Internet is buzzing that Katy Perry turned $20 million dollars to be an American Idol judge. That is a lot of freaking money but is there any truth to this rumor? TMZ broke the story that Perry had said no thank you to the powers that be at American Idol. The big wigs at the hit reality show were reportedly hoping that the ?Firework? singer would take a seat at the judge?s table. Apparently they were so desperate to have her on the show they went as high as $20 million to try and entice her, that was for only a one-year contract too. Despite the desperate attempt by those at AI, who allegedly relentless pursued Katy, she made it very clear she was not interested in doing the show. Yep apparently not even a hefty paycheck could convince her to give the show a chance. There are reports that she didn?t think it was the right career choice for her. I have to say TMZ is usually right on when they report stories so I am inclined to believe this little rumor. That being said it does not surprise me at all that Perry said no. I mean [...]

American Heart Association says Blood type may influence Heart ...

?

American Heart AssociationDallas, TX ? People with blood type A, B, or AB had a higher risk for coronary heart disease when compared to those with blood type O, according to new research published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, an American Heart Association journal.

People in this study with the rarest blood type ? AB, found in about 7 percent of the U.S. population ? had the highest increased heart disease risk at 23 percent. Those with type B had an 11 percent increased risk, and those with type A had a 5 percent increased risk. About 43 percent of Americans have type O blood.

?While people cannot change their blood type, our findings may help physicians better understand who is at risk for developing heart disease,? said Lu Qi, M.D., Ph.D., the study?s senior author and an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

Knowing your blood type can be an important part of staying healthy and avoiding heart disease, Qi said. ?It?s good to know your blood type the same way you should know your cholesterol or blood pressure numbers,? he said. ?If you know you?re at higher risk, you can reduce the risk by adopting a healthier lifestyle, such as eating right, exercising and not smoking.?

The findings are based on an analysis of two large, well-known U.S. studies ? 62,073 women from the Nurses? Health Study and 27,428 adults from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Participants were between ages 30 and 75, and both groups were followed for 20 years or more.

Researchers also considered the study participants? diet, age, body mass index, gender, race, smoking status, menopause status and medical history. Researchers noted that the percentages of different blood types seen among the men and women enrolled in the two studies reflected levels seen in the general population.

The study did not evaluate the biological processes behind blood type and heart disease risk.

?Blood type is very complicated, so there could be multiple mechanisms at play,? Qi said.

However, there is evidence suggesting that type A is associated with higher levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the waxy substance that can clog arteries, and type AB is linked to inflammation, which may affect the function of the blood vessels. Also, a substance that plays a favorable role in blood flow and clotting may be higher in people with type O blood.

Understanding blood type could help healthcare providers better tailor treatments, Qi suggested. For example, a patient with type A blood may best lower heart disease risk by decreasing cholesterol intake.

The study group was predominantly Caucasian, and it?s not clear whether these findings would translate to other ethnic groups. Environment also contributes to risk, Qi said.

?It would be interesting to study whether people with different blood types respond differently to lifestyle intervention, such as diet,? Qi said, noting that further analysis is needed.

In a Tuesday Aug.21, 2012 photo, a co-worker comes to the aid of Morgan Logan of Acton after he was run over by a runaway cow on 10th Ave. S. near S. 28th St. in Billings, Mont. Acton, who was injured while trying to help corral the cow, has been released from the hospital. (AP) ? A construction worker who tried to help police corral a runaway cow said the bovine charged at him "like a bull at a rodeo," tossing him into the air before continuing its rampage through the streets of Montana's largest city.

The snorting, charging cow ran amok in downtown Billings on Tuesday for more than an hour and a half, terrifying pedestrians and knocking over a bicyclist until a police sniper fired a single shot through its heart.

Morgan Logan of Acton suffered broken bones in his lower leg and had sore ribs after his encounter with the 1,200-pound black Angus cow after it escaped from the Public Auction Yards on Tuesday afternoon, The Billings Gazette (http://bit.ly/MOC8uM) reported.

Logan, 52, said he was driving a gravel truck when he saw the police chasing the animal and decided to try to help.

"I've been around livestock my whole life, so at first sight I thought it was pretty funny seeing cops chase a cow down the street," said Logan. "But she was like a bull at a rodeo."

The cow charged at him from under a tree, said Logan, who was released from the hospital Wednesday.

"I guess I saw her too late because the next thing I knew I was in the air," Logan said. "I had no fence to climb ? she caught me right in the open."

Billings police Lt. Kevin Iffland said by the time Logan encountered the cow it had already tipped over a bicyclist, charged pedestrians and nearly jumped over a police vehicle.

"It's not like we are out in the pasture," Iffland said Wednesday. "This was a totally different scenario of asphalt and a lot of traffic. We are not equipped to wrangle large animals in a city environment."

A police marksman shot the cow in the heart with a rifle about two hours after it escaped.

"There were a lot of factors that were considered that went into this as well ? backgrounds and angles," Iffland said, "and whether to shoot in the head or heart. We were certainly concerned with the most humane way and the safest way."

Auction yard manager Bob Cook said the consigned cow was "on the fight" as they tried to unload it at about 3 p.m. Tuesday and tried to run back into the trailer before escaping.

"I guess she saw just enough daylight through the wing doors and crashed through them," he said. "She was mad when she came off the truck and those kinds of cows can certainly be dangerous."

Jeramie Burg, 35, of Billings, was leaving the library when he first spotted the rampaging cow.

"The way the cow was snarling and scuffing, at first I thought it was a bull without horns," Burg said. "It was total chaos. At one point, I saw the cow tip over a man who was on a bicycle in South Park."

Cook said the cow's carcass was taken to the city landfill.

Customizing Classic Cars, more than Fun | Automotive Site

Posted by admin August - 23 - 2012 Comments Off

Along with the increase of intensity in how people conduct daily activity, we should notice that there is also an important aspect that people should pay attention such as mobility. For example, people who work in certain company or office, they must be punctual in order to gain better reputation in their workplace right? Yet, it will be so lame if those people should walk or use public transportation that seems to be risky to make them late. Therefore, certain necessity such as buying private car indeed may become many people?s priority in their life. It is not only to provide better mobility, such car can also increase their social status whether in their neighborhood or in their workplace.

If we discuss about car, I bet that all of you already recognize that there are many types of car that they can choose from the marketplace as their private vehicle. Actually, different people may have different preferences as well in buying their car. For example, people who look for luxury and elegance, they may prefer sedan or sport car as their choice. Yet, for people who really consider more about precious aspect of history, they may prefer classic and vintage cars indeed. Don?t ever judge that classic cars are always old and useless because the fact is that you can conduct customization for your classic cars, for example is by buying auto air compressor to perform air conditioning conversion.

Installing hydraulics system to your classic cars actually can also become good booster for you. The reason why people conduct such customization is not only because they want to gain better function but also to enhance their fun and hobby. There are many sources and stores where you can get any of parts that you need to customize your classic cars online for example is from Oldairproducts.com. Although some people also consider that utility vehicle by Bennche provides them what they need in mobility, classic cars indeed still become great choice for many people right?

Vucic Boosts Serbia's Military Ties to Russia :: Balkan Insight

Aleksandar Vucic, Defence Minister and head of Serbia?s National Security Council, will meet on Wednesday with Russia?s Vice President in charge of defence, Dmirty Rogozin.

The stated aim of the Russian visit is to boost cooperation between the two countries, their armies and defence industries.

So far Serbia's defence cooperation with Russia was minimal, Predrag Popovic, a Serbian military expert from the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, noted.

Popovic told Balkan Insight that Serbia's military cooperation had previously been closest with the US, while its military reforms had been conducted with an eye to meeting NATO standards.

In his first public address in July, Vucic said he would continue Serbia's policy of military neutrality. There were no plans to join NATO and cooperation with Russia would improve.

Serbia became a member of NATO's Partnership for Peace, PfP, program in December 2006, signing a co-operation agreement with NATO concerning a raft of democratic, institutional and defence reforms.

Vladan Zivulovic, president of the Atlantic Council of Serbia, told the daily newspaper Danas that the visit aimed to improve political cooperation and discuss Russia's further use of the military base in the city of Nis.

Vucic's appointment as a Minister of Defence and head of National Security Council, which controls all security services in the country, has been widely criticized, as concentrating too many powers in one hand.

Popovic said his appointment placed all the security services in the hands of one political party, the Progressive Party, of which Vucic is acting head.

Popovic also questioned Vucic?s qualifications to coordinate successfully all the various services in question.

Parliament's Council for Security Policy is also under the control of the Progressives, as its head, Jadranka Joksimovic, is also a member of the Progressive Party.

Scholarly Writing vs. Public Speaking - Research as a Second ...

Stephen Marche's post on Esquire's Culture Blog about Niall Ferguson is worth reading. It's a nice continuation of Eric Garland's thoughts about "our thirst for non-threatening answers" and Felix Salmon's critique of the "dark arts" of the TED conferences and their role in the Jonah Lehrer affair. Here's the part that troubles me most in Marche's piece:

Nonfiction writers can and do make vastly more, and more easily, than they could ever make any other way, including by writing bestselling books or being a Harvard professor. Articles and ideas are only as good as the fees you can get for talking about them. They are merely billboards for the messengers.

What is disturbing about this is that making a billboard is not only something other than scholarship, it undermines scholarship. Ferguson and Lehrer are both accused of shoddy work, and the explanation that is here being offered is that such work sells better than careful scholarship. Moreover, the writing itself isn't the "product". The writing is just a way of getting the speaking gig, which, in Ferguson's case appears to earn him fifty-thousand dollars per speech.

Meanwhile, academic life is becoming an increasingly ordinary affair, a job in which you hurry from task to task in an attempt to satisfy the demands of your bosses. There was a time when a tenured professorship meant you could think whatever thoughts you like, and reaching this state of intellectual freedom was the goal. Now, it seems, smart people have another goal. They develop "ideas worth spreading", meaning by "worth" that they can make a great deal of money off it, enough to buy their freedom I guess. "Thought," as Ian Bogost put it, "is just nature's way of banking." (Hat tip to Evgeny Morozov via Steve Fuller for the tweet.)

A little music training goes a long way: Practicing music for only few years in childhood helps improve adult brain

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? A little music training in childhood goes a long way in improving how the brain functions in adulthood when it comes to listening and the complex processing of sound, according to a new Northwestern University study.

The impact of music on the brain has been a hot topic in science in the past decade. Now Northwestern researchers for the first time have directly examined what happens after children stop playing a musical instrument after only a few years -- a common childhood experience.

Compared to peers with no musical training, adults with one to five years of musical training as children had enhanced brain responses to complex sounds, making them more effective at pulling out the fundamental frequency of the sound signal.

The fundamental frequency, which is the lowest frequency in sound, is crucial for speech and music perception, allowing recognition of sounds in complex and noisy auditory environments.

"Thus, musical training as children makes better listeners later in life," said Nina Kraus, the Hugh Knowles Professor of Neurobiology, Physiology and Communication Sciences at Northwestern.

"Based on what we already know about the ways that music helps shape the brain," she said, "the study suggests that short-term music lessons may enhance lifelong listening and learning."

"A Little Goes a Long Way: How the Adult Brain is Shaped by Musical Training in Childhood" will be published in the Aug. 22 edition of the Journal of Neuroscience.

"We help address a question on every parent's mind: 'Will my child benefit if she plays music for a short while but then quits training?'" Kraus said.

Many children engage in group or private music instruction, yet, few continue with formal music classes beyond middle or high school.

But most neuroscientific research has focused on the rare and exceptional music student who has continued an active music practice during college or on the rarer case of a professional musician who has spent a lifetime immersed in music.

"Our research captures a much larger section of the population with implications for educational policy makers and the development of auditory training programs that can generate long-lasting positive outcomes," Kraus said.

For the study, young adults with varying amounts of past musical training were tested by measuring electrical signals from the auditory brainstem in response to eight complex sounds ranging in pitch. Because the brain signal is a faithful representation of the sound signal, researchers are able to observe how key elements of the sound are captured by the nervous system and how these elements might be weakened or strengthened in different people with different experiences and abilities.

Forty-five adults were grouped into three age- and IQ- matched groups based on histories of musical instruction. One group had no musical instruction; another had 1 to 5 years; and the other had to 6 to 11 years. Both musically trained groups began instrumental practice around age 9 years, a common age for in-school musical instruction to begin. As predicted, musical training during childhood led to more robust neural processing of sounds later in life.

Prior research on highly trained musicians and early bilinguals revealed that enhanced brainstem responses to sound are associated with heightened auditory perception, executive function and auditory communication skills.

"From this earlier research, we infer that a few years of music lessons also confer advantages in how one perceives and attends to sounds in everyday communication situations, such as noisy restaurants or rides on the "L," Kraus said.

A running theme in Kraus' research is "your past shapes your present."

"The way you hear sound today is dictated by the experiences with sound you've had up until today," she said. "This new finding is a clear embodiment of this theme."

In past research, Kraus and her team examined how bilingual upbringing and long-term music lessons affect the auditory brain and how the brain changes after a few weeks of intensive auditory experiences, such as computerized training. Their current research is investigating the impact of socioeconomic hardships on adolescent brain function.

"We hope to use this new finding, in combination with past discoveries, to understand the type of education and remediation strategies, such as music classes and auditory-based training that might be most effective in combating the negative impact of poverty," she said.

By understanding the brain's capacity to change and then maintain these changes, the research can inform the development of effective and long-lasting auditory-based educational and rehabilitative programs.

Avoid pan-fried meat to lower prostate cancer risk

Numerous studies have linked red meat with prostate cancer. Recent research suggests that how meat is cooked may also be a factor. One of the latest studies associates pan-fried meat with a significant increase in the risk of prostate cancer.

pan frying red meat and prostate cancer risk

Red meat and prostate cancer

Previous studies have associated diets high in red meat with an increased risk of prostate cancer. Recent research shows that cooking meat at high temperatures forms powerful carcinogens that may increase prostate cancer risk even more.

A team of scientists from the University of Southern California and Cancer Prevention Institute of California found that red meats cooked at high temperatures, especially pan-fried red meats, may increase the risk of advanced prostate cancer by as much as 40 percent.

Pan-fried carcinogens

The study, available online in the journal Carcinogenesis, gathered data from about 2,000 men who completed a questionnaire about their red meat cooking and consumption habits.? A little over 1,000 of the participants had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.

According to the findings, men in the study who ate more than 1.5 servings of pan-fried meat a week were 30 percent more likely to have advanced prostate cancer those who said they rarely ate it. Men eating more than 2.5 servings of red meat, whether it was pan-fried, grilled or broiled, had a 40 percent increased risk of developing the disease.

Hamburger the worst

On the plus side, men who ate more baked poultry had lower prostate cancer risk. But once the poultry was pan-fried, the risk increased. Of all the pan-fried red meats contributing to prostate cancer, hamburger had the strongest association. Researchers speculated that hamburger accumulates higher levels of carcinogens because ground beef gets hotter and cooks faster than steak.

HCAs and PAHs

The USC study did not determine a cause and effect relationship between pan-fried meat and prostate cancer. But it is known that carcinogens known as heterocyclic amines (HCAs) form when the sugars and amino acids in meat are cooked at high temperatures. Grilling meat possibly adds to the risk factor, because smoke that rises when fat drips on the flames leaves deposits of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), another potent carcinogen, on the meat.

Avoid prostate cancer

Prostate cancer affects one out of six men in the U.S. About one in 36 men die from the disease, making it second only to lung cancer as the leading cancer killer, according to the American Cancer Society.

The facts about red meat, HCAs and PAHs may be hard to swallow during the summer barbecue season. But avoiding pan-fried red meat and poultry is a fairly easy and inarguably sensible approach to lowering the risk of developing prostate cancer.

How Social Media And New Technologies ... - Business 2 Community

Over the last years, the internet became more than just a collection of information. According to the latest statistics, more and more people are actually using the internet because of social media sites. A lot of people today are using Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin for their internet presence. Whether for professional use or for your own personal use, it is important to be careful on what you post online.

For the pros of having social media sites, we are now connected to each other. However, a lot of people have missed the point of social media posting inappropriate things on their Facebook or saying negative tweets about other people. These things have its negative consequences especially now that recruitment and HR personnel from different companies are now scouting bad behavior of current employers and applicants.

The latest numbers in May of 2012 indicated that there were over 1 billion social media users all over the world. This indicates the undeniable influence that social media sites have brought to our lives over the past couple of years. This staggering number is now the same reason why companies are maximizing business opportunities offered by the social media sites. They have used this in order to target potential markets but as of now, it is not just limited to lead generation. Employment opportunities could now be hindered or helped by the presence of social media sites.

According to the latest studies,91% of employers are making use of different social media sites in order to trim their applicants for a certain position. Among the things that they utilize are Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. 76% of the respondents mentioned that they make use of Facebook in order to know whether or not the person drinks a lot, gives away precious information about the company or maybe talks trash about previous employers.

In the same study, it is surprising to find that there are actually 47% of employers who already screened their candidates? social media accounts right after receiving their applications. From the get go, you were already gauged as a potential asset to their company. If you happened to have passed consecutive interviews, you have to remember not to be too confident. Even before the final contract arrives in front of you, there is a chance that you would still be rejected for the position. There is still a 4% of companies that screen applicants just before they make the final decision.

If you are thinking of posting anything negative about yourself online or about your past company, you better think again. According to the same study, 63% of these employers actually admitted to have kicked out applications because of things they didn?t like on your social media network.
