The Pros and Cons of Online College Degrees

Having a college degree program from online has its own benefits. We can observe this benefit through the money we can save, flexibility of time, and also in physical location. While these are true, there may be just a few disadvantages. This includes limited instructor interaction and tendency to procrastinate. Take your time reading and absorbing them.

THE PROS:

Savings ? what could be more convenient than having an online college degree program for less? Having an online degree program saves you considerable cost because the lessons are online. Physical books take up the bulk of education costs. Imagine the financial savings you could have because the information you get from those books are already at your fingers tips. Tuition fees are also minimal in comparison to conventional schools where you contribute for the use of school facilities and miscellaneous matters. Also having online colleges financial aid makes availing of online programs much compared to conventional schooling.

Location ? this is a very obvious advantage for any online college degree program. Imagine the hassle and hustle of traveling to school every day. This benefits those who are living in remote or country areas who don?t want to commute or move to big cities just to attend college. Even if you are in other parts of the world, you have access to any online degree program.

Time ? is an important element on every academic endeavor. Because we are living in a fast-paced environment, it is liberating to know that there is an available scheme for someone who wants to get a college degree in the schedule and time that he wants. The greatest benefit to time is that you can get your degree and work at the same time.

THE CONS:

Less instructor-student interaction ? a downside to taking online degrees is that it deals less with instructor interaction. This is a disadvantage especially in matters where you have not fully understood the basics principles of some lessons or topics. Interaction with your instructor can help deepen your understanding about certain topics. However, this is offset by instructor interaction scheduled talks, online chats, regular e-mails, or social networks.

Tendency to Procrastinate if student is lacking self-discipline ? the convenience of online education can have a drawback if the student is lacking in self-discipline since there are no physical school authority figures to follow-up your progress. The tendency then is to feel relaxed. However, if you are motivated enough to earn your degree in the fastest time possible and reap the benefits in the future, submission of assigned work and projects should be no question to you.

Looking at the pros and cons, one can safely say that the cons can be easily surmounted by the self. Seeing and reaping the benefits of the pros is enough motivation for anyone to finish their online degree education.

Be alert for parking ban during Porter July 4 midnight parade

With the upcoming July 4 festivities approaching, Porter police chief James Spanier shared information residents should know with the Town Council on Tuesday.

He said for the July 3 fireworks, which take place at the Indiana Dunes State Park but affect the Porter Beach area, beach residents can get a flyer at either the Police Department or the town hall that will help ease congestion.

Spanier also advised that parking on the north side of Lincoln Street in downtown Porter will be banned during the July 4 midnight parade; illegally parked vehicles will be towed.

Public Works director Brenda Brueckheimer urged Porter residents to fly American flags for the July 4 midnight parade and for the Family 4th Fest parade later that day.

By unanimous vote the council approved an assembly permit for The Village Tavern to conduct a street dance on a closed portion of Lincoln Street July 14 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. The annual event is a fundraiser for the Porter Fire Department.

In other business, it was announced that signs are being put back up at Porter Beach to warn the public when they are entering an easement across private property and to please be respectful when they are on it.

Park superintendent Jim Miller said VFW Post 2511 has donated $200 toward the repair of the War Memorial at Hawthorne Park. Miller also said its a challenge to maintain 27 newly planted trees at Hawthorne in the current heat and drought.

Associate town attorney Laura Frost said Porters zoning boards are recommending that town hall staff, not the Porter County Assessors Office, provide the list of contiguous property owners needed for notification of a pending zoning petition. Frost suggested a new $20 town fee for the service. An ordinance will be drafted for Town Council consideration July 10.

Also Tuesday, to comply with a new Indiana law the council voted 5-0 under suspension of the rules with no discussion to adopt a recommended policy regarding nepotism and contracting with the town. Council president Greg Stinson said if the town didnt adopt the ordinance by July 1, it could face budget delays from the state.

The meeting began with applause as retiring Ward 1 council member Bill Cantrell entered the room. At the conclusion of her report Brueckheimer told Cantrell, "I cant even tell you how much youve improved my world. Thank you so very much, Bill."

Cantrell was a member of the Porter Stormwater Management Board prior to his election and he continued to serve on that board, which works closely with Brueckheimer on town drainage projects and the federally mandated MS4 stormwater program.

IMF Institute for Capacity Development and Regional Multidisciplinary Centre of Excellence (RMCE) course on economic issues in regional integration funded by the European Union

?

PORT-LOUIS, Mauritius, June 29, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ ? The course on Economic Issues in Regional Integration organised by the IMF?s Institute for Capacity Development (ICD) and the Regional Multidisciplinary Centre of Excellence (RMCE) took place from 18 to 29 June in Port Louis, Mauritius. The course?s overall objective was to broaden the participants understanding of various aspects of economic and monetary integration.

?

Twenty six participants, with a broad range of professional backgrounds, drawn from twelve African countries met in Port Louis to attend the course.

?

The course, consisting of lectures and workshops, was designed and presented by a team of economists from the IMF?s ICD department and covered a wide range of topics including trade, economic, financial and monetary integration. The trainers discussed the costs and benefits of the implementation process and political economy aspects of integration. Participants used both theory and case studies to compare economic and monetary integration experiences worldwide, and to reflect in particular on integration processes underway in the African Regional Economic Communities.

?

The course was organised by the Regional Multidisciplinary Centre of Excellence (RMCE) which is a regionally owned training and advisory centre and a forum for dialogue on regional integration issues. The centre is based in Mauritius, hosted by the Government of Mauritius and financed in large part by the European Union via a grant of EUR 5.6 million signed between the EU and COMESA for the benefit of the RMCE. RMCE?s Executive Director, Helen Mealins noted: ?We are delighted the IMF has launched the inaugural presentation of this course in partnership with the RMCE and the European Union. This type of training, and the networking opportunities it offers, serves to support senior public policy makers, private sector executives and civil society leaders to accelerate economic growth and development in Africa. ?

?

In her remarks at the closing ceremony, the representative of the EU, Mrs Cecile Tassin-Pelzer, reiterated the European Union?s commitment to support regional integration in the region: ?We all know that regional integration is a fundamental pillar for peace and prosperity and for the wider integration into the world economy?.

?

Background

?

The Regional Multidisciplinary Centre of Excellence (RMCE) serves as a capacity building and expertise hub for the regional economic communities of: the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA); East African Community (EAC); Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD); Indian Ocean Commission (IOC); Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) and their combined 28 Member Countries. RMCE?s mandate also critically includes support to the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite Process. The Centre commissions tailored short courses, seminars, peer learning events and conferences that directly address the regional integration challenges identified by these countries and organisations.

?

The Institute for Capacity Development (ICD) was launched by the International Monetary Fund on May 1, 2012 to spearhead its enhanced strategy for capacity-building services for its member countries. These capacity development efforts are aimed at helping member countries develop their skills base and build more robust economic and financial institutions. ICD, a new department incorporating the former IMF Institute and Office of Technical Assistance Management, will enable stronger synergies and better coordination between IMF technical assistance, training, and other elements of capacity development, to better adapt to member countries? priorities and needs.

?

In addition to delivering technical assistance and training services from its Washington, D.C. headquarters, the IMF supports capacity development in the field through a network of eight regional technical assistance centres and seven regional training centres.

?

The European Union is a long-standing supporter of the Eastern and Southern Africa-Indian Ocean region (ESA-IO). Its support is enshrined in the Regional Strategy Paper, which is the EU?s programme for supporting regional integration in the Eastern and Southern Africa and Indian Ocean. Under the 10th European Development Fund (2008 ? 2013), a financial envelope of EUR 645 million has been allocated to the ESA-IO to support regional economic integration, especially regional integration policies, trade and Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) with the EU and regional sector policies. Programmes are identified and developed under the framework of the Inter-Regional Coordination Committee (IRCC) which was established to ensure the overall coordination within the ESA-IO region. The support of the EU reflects its strong commitment to regional integration in Africa as a whole, and this region in particular, as well as the faith in the ability of the above mentioned four regional organisations to progress with their integration agenda.

?

Together these organisations are working to build capacity in the private and public sectors, to address regional economic integration issues in Africa and the wider world.

Why is the sun's atmosphere hotter than its surface? Maybe it's those huge plasma tornadoes.

Scientists may have an answer to one of the sun's greatest mysteries: Why is the sun's atmosphere some 300 times hotter than its surface?

By Nola Taylor Redd, Space.com Contributor,?Space.com / June 28, 2012

For years, scientists have struggled to determine why the sun's atmosphere is more than 300 times hotter than its surface. But a new study has found a possible answer: giant super-tornadoes on the sun that may be injecting heat into the outer layers of our star.

While comparing images from the Swedish Solar Telescope with others taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, an international team of scientists noticed bright points on the sun's surface and atmosphere that corresponded with swirls in the so-called chromospheres, a region that is sandwiched between the two layers. The finding indicates that ?the solar tornadoes stretched through all three layers of the sun.

The scientists went on to identify 14 solar super-tornadoes occurring within an hour of each other. By using a three dimensional simulation, the team then found that the swirls could play a role in elevating the sun's outer layer.

A sun 'super-tornado' is born

Unlike tornadoes on Earth, which are powered by differences in temperature and humidity, the twisters on the sun are a combination of hot flowing gas and tangled magnetic field lines, ultimately driven by nuclear reactions in the solar core. [How Sun Tornadoes? Work (Infographic)]

At the surface, or photosphere, cooled plasma sinks toward the interior like water running down the bathtub drain, creating vortexes that magnetic field lines are forced to follow. The lines stretch upward into the chromosphere, where they continue to spiral.

But while the hot gas at the surface drives the movement of the magnetic field, in the chromosphere it is the field lines that force the hot gas to spiral, creating the swirls that appear similar to tornadoes on Earth.

"The resulting funnel is narrow at the bottom and widens with height in the atmosphere," lead scientist Sven Wedemeyer-B?hm, of the University of Oslo in Norway, told SPACE.com by email.

Spinning at thousands of miles per hour, the tornadoes vary in size, with diameters ranging from 930 to 3,500 miles (1,500 to 5,550 kilometers). Some of these giant solar twisters extend all the up in to the lower portion of the sun's upper atmosphere (called the corona, the researchers said.

Mortgage Fraud Blog - Attorney Sentenced for Mortgage Fraud ...

James Boyd Douglas, Jr., 42, who previously practiced law in Lee County, Alabama, was sentenced to 45 months in prison for engaging in a multimillion-dollar mortgage fraud scheme.

As previously reported on Mortgage Fraud Blog, between January 2005 and September 23, 2011, Douglas handled numerous real estate closings and real estate refinancing transactions on behalf of his clients. As part of the real estate closings, Douglas received the proceeds of new mortgage loans. Douglas was supposed to use the proceeds from new mortgage loans to repay the old mortgage loans on the properties that were being sold or refinanced. But instead of using that money to repay the old loans, Douglas embezzled approximately $2.3 million from his clients? real estate closings over approximately six years.

Testimony in the sentencing hearing revealed that Douglas stole this $2.3 million from people and mortgage companies in order to hide his gambling addiction. ?Douglas was a lawyer, and lawyers who commit crimes must be held to the same standard as everyone else and must receive the same treatment as everyone else,? stated Assistant United States Attorney, Jared Morris. ?That is what we did in this case, and the sentence imposed on Mr. Douglas reflects that principle.?

Douglas was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Mark E. Fuller to 45 months in prison and ordered to pay restitution. A restitution hearing will be held at a later date.

The investigation of this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jared Morris.

Republicans not backing down on contempt votes

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, goes to the House Rules Committee to argue procedures as the House of Representatives prepares to vote on whether Attorney General Eric Holder is in contempt of Congress because he has refused to give the Oversight Committee all the documents it wants related to Operation Fast and Furious, the flawed gun-smuggling probe involving Mexican drug cartels, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, June 27, 2012. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? Barring a last-minute deal, House Republicans plan historic votes Thursday to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in civil and criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over documents related to a bungled gun-tracking operation.

A sitting attorney general never has been held in contempt, and Republicans picked an odd day to set a precedent. They scheduled the votes the same day the Supreme Court was deciding the legality of President Barack Obama's health care law.

Passage of the contempt resolutions was not in doubt. Republicans control the House and are likely to pick up votes from Democrats who support the National Rifle Association. The NRA said it's keeping score on how members vote, partly because the gun owners' group believes the Obama administration wanted to use the program ? called Operation Fast and Furious ? to make the case for more gun control.

Democrats who normally support the NRA but vote against the contempt citations would lose their 100 percent ratings. That could affect their endorsements from the powerful organization, particularly if Republican opponents surface who are strong NRA backers.

Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., the longest serving House member and a staunch NRA supporter, said Wednesday he would not back the contempt resolutions but instead wants the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to conduct a more thorough investigation. Dingell has said he does not consider the contempt vote to be a gun control issue.

The 42-member Congressional Black Caucus said its members would walk out and refrain from voting.

"Contempt power should be used sparingly, carefully and only in the most egregious situations," a letter from the caucus to House members said. "The Republican leadership has articulated no legislative purpose for pursuing this course of action. For these reasons, we cannot and will not participate in a vote to hold the attorney general in contempt."

The criminal contempt resolution would send the matter to the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, who is under Holder. The civil contempt resolution would allow the House to go to court in an effort to force Holder to turn over documents the oversight committee wants. In past cases, courts have been reluctant to settle disputes between the executive and legislative branches of government.

The House is unlikely to get the documents anytime soon, because Obama has invoked a broad form of executive privilege, which protects from disclosure internal documents from executive branch agencies.

Republicans want to focus on the economy and health care in an election year. They're hoping the diversion of holding the nation's chief law enforcement officer in contempt will not muddle their message.

Democrats have kept up steady criticism, accusing the GOP majority of trying to embarrass the administration and rushing to judgment rather than putting more effort into a compromise that could give Republicans the documents they want.

Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the oversight committee, said a committee report recommending contempt had more than 100 mischaracterizations, omissions and errors. He said the dispute could be settled if House Speaker John Boehner became personally involved in negotiations.

In Operation Fast and Furious, agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Arizona abandoned the agency's usual practice of intercepting all weapons they believed to be illicitly purchased. Instead, the goal of the tactic known as "gun-walking" was to track such weapons to high-level arms traffickers who had eluded prosecution and to dismantle their networks.

Gun-walking long has been barred by Justice Department policy, but federal agents in Arizona experimented with it in at least two investigations during the George W. Bush administration before Operation Fast and Furious. The agents in Arizona lost track of several hundred weapons in that operation.

Two of the guns turned up at the scene where border agent Brian Terry was killed in Arizona in a shootout with Mexican bandits.

Ironically, the documents at the heart of the current argument are not directly related to the workings of Operation Fast and Furious. Rather, they are internal Justice Department communications after February 2011, when the Obama administration falsely told Congress that guns were not allowed to "walk" to Mexico. The department has given the oversight committee's chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., 7,600 documents on the operation itself.

Fast and Furious had been shut down by the time of the false information, but Issa wants documents showing Justice Department deliberations during the 10 months it took for the administration to acknowledge the error.

Issa told the House Rules Committee on Wednesday that he had no evidence that Holder personally knew that guns were allowed to "walk." But he has said he suspected some Justice Department officials were part of a cover-up.

Democrats insisted the administration did nothing wrong and said Republicans were just playing politics.

"It has all the trappings of a witch hunt," said Rep. Louise Slaughter of New York, the top Democrat on the rules committee. "I don't think there's any way we're doing justice to Brian Terry with what we're doing today."

Issa, however, said the documents he wants are essential to learn who in the administration produced a February 2011 letter with false information.

Referring to Justice Department officials, Issa said, "When did they know we were lied to, and what did they do about it?"

Issa also said closure was needed for Terry's family.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday that the public would view the vote as "political theater" and "gamesmanship."

Carney said the Justice Department and the White House on Tuesday had shown House Republicans a representative sample of the documents they were seeking. He said the administration's offer would have provided "unprecedented access" to internal communications about how it responded to congressional inquiries into the Fast and Furious program.

The Psychology of Middle School Kids Bullying a Bus Monitor ...

The Psychology of Middle School Kids Bullying a Bus MonitorWith over 1.6 million views at the moment, this video ? filmed by one of the students who was apparently involved in the incident ? shows a small group of middle school students in Greece, NY bullying Karen Klein, a 68-year-old grandmother and Bus #784?s unfortunate bus monitor.

Klein is shown crying in the video, while the kids hurl profanity and insults at her. Klein reportedly said the comment that hurt the most was when a student told her she is so ugly that her kids ?should kill themselves.?

Klein?s son committed suicide ten years ago, according to Metro.

While the school district makes noises about all the kids involved facing ?disciplinary action,? the question remains ? how did we get here? How did this bullying situation occur, and why did it occur?

The answer is a little more nuanced than you may appreciate.

Bullying has been a rising problem among children and teenagers for years. The Internet?s (often false) sense of anonymity has amplified this trend in the past 10 years. Pair it with a teen?s inexperienced (and often poor) judgment, and you have an recipe ripe for growth.

School districts that don?t have a proactive anti-bullying program in place may often find themselves at a disadvantage when an incident like this happens. But most school programs don?t address this kind of opportunistic bullying ? a group of kids bullying a lone adult.

The video (below) captures a confluence of factors which provided an opportunity for the 10 minutes of bullying to occur:

  • The lone adult around them was vulnerable.

Young teen bullies have a sixth sense when it comes to vulnerability, no matter the person?s age. The person in the video viciously attacks Karen because he?s a pro at identifying Klein?s weaknesses. The fact that the group is attacking an adult doesn?t even seem to enter into the equation.

  • The adult was a senior citizen.

Undisciplined children and teenagers today, more so than at any previous point in history, have virtually no respect for senior citizens. Whether it?s because they were never taught it, or believe the older people have nothing of interest to offer them of relevance to their lives, it?s not clear.

But when a child or teen isn?t taught to give at least a modicum of respect people who are seniors, they may believe there?s nothing wrong with insulting them.

  • The adult was apparently given no real authority to discipline the children.

Putting an adult into a situation where they are meant to police children, but making them powerless to actually do so, is a situation just begging to be exploited. Some young teenagers are very aware when adults have no real authority over them. These teens will then sometimes take advantage of such a situation when the moment presents itself.

If the point of a ?bus monitor? is to sit there and help keep kids on a bus more under control leaving the bus driver to the important ask of actually driving the bus, then the bus monitor must be given a set of tools they can use to enforce appropriate behavior on a moving, motorized vehicle. Just plopping an adult into a moving room of 60 kids isn?t going to have the same effect it might have had 30 or 40 years ago.

  • The environment provided the opportunity.

In normal situations, a group of teens wouldn?t dream of bullying an adult at their school for 10 minutes straight. But put kids on a bus, and suddenly kids have unfettered access with very little oversight until their stop. This has long been a recipe for disaster that school districts for decades have been aware of (it was little different when I went to school and was bused into the neighboring inner-city for desegregation).

What?s different is that parents are providing less discipline at home and expecting schools to do more with less. Parents today are often more likely to back up their kids in disputes with schools, rather than taking the school?s side in a dispute or discipline problem.

This provides a simple message to some teens and kids ? ?I can get away with murder, and my parents will back me up.? Allowing inappropriate behavior without consequences is a very good teacher.

  • The environment reinforces a ?mob mentality.?

?When people are part of a group, they often experience deindividuation, or a loss of self-awareness,? says Tamara Avant, Psychology program director at South University ? Savannah. ?When [this happens], they are less likely to follow normal restraints and inhibitions and more likely to lose their sense of individual identity.?

?Groups can generate a sense of emotional excitement, which can lead to the provocation of behaviors that a person would not typically engage in if alone.?

But mob mentality doesn?t form every time you get a group of kids together. So why did one form this time?

?First, many people believe they cannot be held responsible for violent behavior when part of a mob because they perceive the violent action as the group?s (e.g., ?everyone was doing it?) rather than their own behavior,? notes Avant.

?Second, physical anonymity also leads to a person experiencing fewer social inhibitions. When people feel that their behavior cannot be traced back to them, they are more likely to break social norms and engage in violence.?

Teenagers often have a very poor sense of judgment, since they lack enough experience to know when their behaviors can be traced back to them. This group of teens, who took the video and posted it to one of their own Facebook pages, obviously thought it would never be seen outside their group of friends. So they felt more empowered to act like farm animals than human beings.

  • The bus driver didn?t provide back-up the bus monitor.

If the bus driver had been paying attention, they would?ve provided needed back up to the bus monitor. For reasons that remain unclear, the only other adult on the bus apparently ignored the situation.

There?s plenty of blame to go around in this incident. The school district needs to provide better tools to adults if they?re going to put them into these kinds of situations. Parents need to step up and recognize that their failure to parent ? or rely on others to provide the discipline and skills to their children ? contributes to situations like this. And most of all, the teens directly involved in this incident must learn that bad behavior has very real consequences. Poor judgment in a moment like this will reflect on them for the rest of their lives.

And we mustn?t kid ourselves that this is a lone incident. This sort of bad behavior goes on everyday, on dozens of buses around the U.S., in many, many more communities. The only reason we know of this incident is because one of the students involved had such poor judgment, they decided to film it.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Karen Klein, and we wish her all the best in her future life (made all the more richer by the donation fund below).

Watch the video (warning: contains profanity and bullying of a senior citizen):

Show your support and donate to Karen Klein?s vacation fund (which ? now at over $250,000 and climbing quickly! ? is more likely a retirement fund). Update: About 18 hours after I wrote this entry, the fund is now at over $450,000!

JIUQUAN, China (AP) ? China will send its first woman and two other astronauts into space Saturday to work on a temporary space station for about a week, in a key step toward becoming only the third nation to set up a permanent base in orbit.

Liu Yang, a 34-year-old air force pilot, and two male colleagues will be launched Saturday aboard the Shenzhou 9 spacecraft, which will dock with the bus-sized Tiangong 1 space module now orbiting at 343 kilometers (213 miles) above the Earth.

"Arranging for women astronauts to fly is not only a must for the development of human spaceflight, but also the expectation of the public," space program spokeswoman Wu Ping said. "This is a landmark event."

Two of the astronauts will live and work inside the module to test its life-support systems while the third will remain in the capsule to deal with any unexpected emergencies. Wu said the mission will last more than 10 days before the astronauts return to Earth in the capsule, landing on Western Chinese grasslands with the help of parachutes.

The rocket began fueling Friday at the Jiugquan Satellite Launch Center on the edge of the Gobi desert in northern China, Wu told reporters at the center. The launch is scheduled for 6:37 p.m. (1237 GMT) Saturday, she said.

Joining Liu, a major, is veteran astronaut and mission commander Jing Haipeng and newcomer Liu Wang, both air force senior colonels.

"You could say this mission is a combination of the old and the new and coordination between the male and female," Wu said.

Success in docking ? and in living and working aboard the Tiangong 1 ? would smooth the way for more ambitious projects, including the creation of a permanent space station and missions to the moon, and add to China's prestige in line with its growing economic prowess.

China is hoping to join the United States and Russia as the only countries to have sent independently maintained space stations into orbit. It already is in the exclusive three-nation club to have launched a spacecraft with astronauts on its own.

The mission demonstrates China's commitment to "long-term human spaceflight" and marks a test of "the technological capabilities requisite for a future permanent space station," said Joan Johnson-Freese, an expert on the Chinese space program at the U.S. Naval War College in Rhode Island.

Still, that is some years away. The Tiangong 1 is only a prototype, and the plan is to replace it with a permanent ? and bigger ? space station due for completion around 2020.

The permanent station will weigh about 60 tons, slightly smaller than NASA's Skylab of the 1970s and about one-sixth the size of the 16-nation International Space Station.

Analysts say China's exclusion from the ISS, largely on objections from the United States, was one of the key spurs for it to pursue an independent program 20 years ago, which reaches a high point with Saturday's launch.

The three astronauts will perform medicals tests on the effect of weightlessness on the human body, as well as other scientific and engineering tasks on Tiangong, or Heavenly Palace, which was put into orbit in September.

Wu said the capsule would first dock by remote control, then later separate and dock again manually, to prepare the technology for a permanent space station.

"After we have realized both the auto and manual docking technology, we can completely master this technology," she said.

China first launched a man into space in 2003, followed by a two-man mission in 2005 and a three-man trip in 2008 that featured China's first space walk.

In November 2011, the unmanned Shenzhou 8 successfully docked with the Tiangong 1 by remote control ? twice to show the durability of the system.

While operating with limited resources, China's space program is a source of huge pride and enjoys top-level political and military backing. This has left it largely immune from the budgetary pressures affecting NASA, although China doesn't say what it spends on the program.

The selection of the first female astronaut is giving the program a publicity boost. State media have gushed about Liu, reporting she once successfully landed her plane after a bird strike disabled one of its engines.

Shortly after Wu's news conference, reporters were driven to a second building for a question and answer session with the astronauts, who were dressed in blue jump suits and seated behind a glass partition.

"We won't let you down. We will work together and successfully complete this mission," said Liu Yang, who like China's other female astronaut candidates is married and has a child, a requirement because of fears that exposure to space radiation could affect fertility.

Father's Day: A Pop-Culture Gift Guide

To help you show your appreciation for dad, MTV News compiles a list of must-have items.
By James Montgomery

"Game of Thrones" season one on Blu-ray
Photo:

Provided your dad didn't go out for cigarettes and never came back, you'll be celebrating him and all his paternal excellence on Sunday, which — in case you forgot — just so happens to be the 102nd (or so) Father's Day.

And while we here at MTV News would like to point out that you should probably honor your father every day (after all, who else can teach you about the infield fly rule, the double Windsor knot and the rhythm method?), we realize that, more often than not, dad is just the guy you roll your eyes at from the backseat of the car. So perhaps this is the year you finally do him right, with a totally sweet Father's Day gift.

Which is where we come in: Using the full force of the MTV News brain trust, we've compiled a list of gifts sure to make his Father's Day special. From movies and video games to ultra-cool accessories and totally killer rock records, these are the must-haves for any dad.

Because he's worth it. And also because he probably doesn't want another tie.

For the dad still stuck in the 1980s: How about a pair of tickets to "Rock of Ages," the film that captures the rock and roll excesses of the Reagan era in all their full-throttled, feathered-hair glory? Sure, it might be super-embarrassing to sit next to him as he plays air guitar to Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me," but imagine how he feels when you make him drop you off a block and a half away from the mall. You're even.

For the dad who's a super-nerd ... and really into beheadings: Get him a Blu-ray copy of the first season of "Game of Thrones," the bloody-great HBO show that redefines sheer nerdery as we know it. "Thrones" has truly got something for every dad. Machiavellian political dealings, gripping drama and dripping combat scenes — it's all there for the viewing. And shoot, even if he's not into swords and sorcery, there's plenty of nudity. This is what we in the business refer to as a "win/win."

For the dad who fancies himself an anti-hero: Pick up "Max Payne 3," the latest installment of Rockstar Games' truly excellent shooter series. Set eight years after the last game, it finds Max overweight and overwrought, popping pills and dealing with a serious late-life crisis. (Just like your dad!) Of course, it's not all drama; in fact, the third "Payne" game brings back the much-saluted "bullet-time" technology, which slows down the shootouts and maximizes the cinematic gore. As an added bonus, the folks at Rockstar also tout the fact that the killing is more realistic than ever this time out. Plenty of bad guys to smoke, plenty of brooding to be done: It's the kind of feel-good game you and your dad can play together. Ah, memories.

For the dad who wants the latest in shut-in couture: Get him one of the limited-edition Supreme T-shirts designed by noted oddball auteur (and illustrator) Daniel Johnston. Filled with illustrations of cross-bearing Captain Americas, boxing aliens and, uh, more Captain Americas, they're guaranteed to make dad the hit of his next office mixer — and to totally freak out all of his co-workers, too.

For the dad who's totally awesome: Download him a copy of Japandroids' Celebration Rock, the year's most kick-ass rock record. Full of fist-pumping riffs and shout-worthy sing-alongs, it'll take him back to the good old days, when rock was played fast and loud and you could get away with giving songs titles like "Fire's Highway." He'll probably take off his shirt and crack open a cold one, but deal with it. Dad's gotta cut loose somehow.

For the skater dad: Head out to Macy's and pick him out something from Lil Wayne's new Trukfit line, a collection of colorful hats and tees with just enough swag for the skate park. And as if some Weezy association isn't enough to make your pops super cool, consider this: The clothing line's name is an acronym for "The Reason U Kill for It," which automatically makes him the hardest dad on the block.

African Land Fertile Ground For Crops And Investors

Rei do Agro cleared trees from this land over the past 18 months. It previously looked like the land on the right.

Second of a two-part story. Read Part 1

In some countries of Africa, there's a land rush under way as investors claim farmland, establish mega-farms and try to cash in on high prices for food and biofuels. These deals are controversial. Critics accuse investors of dispossessing subsistence farmers.

But there's another side to this story. There are plenty of people working in economic development who believe that this surge of interest in African farmland, if it's handled well, could also be an opportunity for Africa.

Investors certainly think so. Among them is Jes Tarp, CEO of a company called Aslan Global Management. A native of Denmark and former pastor, Tarp now lives in Wisconsin and runs a company that owns tens of thousands of acres of farmland in Ukraine and Africa.

The money for these ventures comes from small investors: "There are farmers, there are doctors, there are insurance agents. People from all walks of life," Tarp says.

Tarp tells these investors that they will do well. The farms in Ukraine are already profitable. And Tarp thinks the one in Africa eventually will yield "solid returns" of 15 to 20 percent each year.

But according to Tarp, his investors also want to do some good in the world. "The one thing that they have in common is, they are looking for an investment where their investment will make a difference," he says.

Some of their money is transforming a remote corner of Mozambique, in southern Africa. It's financing a farm called Rei do Agro, Portuguese for "King of Agriculture."

Trying To Be A Model Corporate Neighbor

Chishamiso Mawoyo, who is in charge of this operation, takes me to the top of a rocky hill for a good view. He points to the right, to land covered by a green canopy of trees. That's how this whole area looked two years ago, he says.

Only a handful of people were living on this land, or growing crops here, before Rei do Agro showed up two years ago. Mawoyo says that's how the company wanted it. "We think it's easier dealing with trees than with people," he says.

Belchion Lucas for NPR

Chishamiso Mawoyo, who grew up in Zimbabwe, is chief operating officer of Aslan Group Africa.

And that's probably the main reason why people I met in the closest village had no problem with Rei do Agro moving in here ? in contrast to their anger at another farm nearby, operated by the Portuguese company Quifel Natural Resources, which took over some of the best land.

But there's a cost to pushing the frontier. Clearing land is hard and expensive. Rei do Agro acquired 3,000 acres from the government almost two years ago, and so far, the company has managed to clear just 600 acres.

Also, the farm is 10 miles from any power lines. Mawoyo and his colleagues have to run a diesel generator almost nonstop to power their lights and computers.

It's a long way from his former life in the comfortable office of a big accounting firm in Zimbabwe. "But once you've gotten in, there's no way out. You've got to see it through," Mawoyo says. "That's part of the excitement, part of the exhilaration."

The company wants to get even bigger. It's hoping to acquire an additionanl 25,000 acres, which includes a small river that it could tap to irrigate some of its fields.

This farm is growing soybeans, which will go to feed chickens. One of the biggest chicken farmers in Mozambique, hundreds of miles south, is waiting to buy some of the harvest.

"[The chicken farmer will] send 15 of his trucks. In two weeks they'll be here. Because he's got a huge demand for soybeans," says Mawoyo.

It's a sign of Mozambique's economic growth. People are earning a little more money, so they're eating more chicken meat, and that means more demand for soybeans to fatten those chickens.

That upward curve of demand is the reason businesses are interested in commercial farming in Mozambique. It's the reason investors in Aslan Global Management and its subsidiary, Aslan Group Africa, expect to make money.

But what about their bigger ambition, to do some good with their money? Tarp, the CEO, is sure that they will. "We are there not to extract wealth from the community, but to build wealth in the community," he says.

Good For Companies, Good For Communities?

Whether that's really true ? whether foreign investment in African farmland is a good thing for local communities ? is currently the subject of intense debate. Is it better, for instance, than providing aid directly to the farmers in those communities, most of whom grow crops by hand, on just a few acres?

On one side of this debate is Jake Walters, director of Mozambique operations for Technoserve. a nonprofit economic development group.

Investors have to preserve resources to make the land produce more or to produce more valuable crops, Walters says. "I think it's the combination of technology and access to markets on a massive scale that these companies have, that really brings that rural area to life in a way that, bit by bit, small people having a little bit of access to capital would not be able to do," he says.

Big companies employ more people, Walters continues. And getting a job is often the one thing that most powerfully transforms a subsistence farmer's life for the better.

On the other side of this debate is Danielle Nierenberg, director of the Worldwatch Institute's Nourishing the Planet project. She's not enthusiastic about 10,000-acre mega-farms growing a single crop.

And, she says, there are better alternatives, that preserve greater diversity in the landscape and in what people eat. Small farmers really can lift themselves out of poverty with just a little training and help ? for instance, with irrigation. She has seen it happen in villages in Ethiopia.

"These were people who went from basically living in huts to being able to build their own houses, to buying bicycles, to sending their children to school for the first time. So you see that these things can work," she says.

Yet Nierenberg and Walters don't completely disagree. They both say that it's doesn't have to be one or the other. You can help small farmers and encourage big ones. In fact, the hot new trend among development agencies is trying to bring these two kinds of farming closer together.

To illustrate how this might work, let's go back to Rei do Agro. That farm hopes to bring in electricity, better roads and water for irrigation.

Keeping Promises

This is often the case with commercial farms. They have to build essential infrastructure. Chris Isaac, the Mozambique-based director of business development for an agricultural development group called AgDevCo, says that once they have built that infrastructure, others can use it, too. "Around those farms, you can extend the infrastructure, including irrigation, to small farmers," he says.

Rei do Agro isn't that far along yet. But it is doing some things that don't cost so much money. It has hired a full-time extension manager to work with a handful of local farmers ? providing seeds, training, and storage for their crops at harvest time, so they can get better prices later.

One of those farmers is Caterina Alberto. She's tall, dignified, and one of the most prosperous farmers in her village ? although like everybody else here, she still has to carry her cooking water from a nearby stream. She and her husband grow crops on about 25 acres, which is a lot for this area.

"We'd like to have more land," she says. "Maybe 60 acres. We have some goals to reach."

In a way, her goals are also those of Mawoyo, the man in charge of Rei do Agro.

In another 20 years, "I would love to see 10 other farms like ours here, with a good cluster of emerging farmers within and around us," he says.

For now, though, that's just a dream. There's not even any guarantee that this one farm will survive. It's a few years, at least, away from making money.

But the company is doubling its bet on Africa, moving into the country of Tanzania, just north of here. Aslan Global Management recently got preliminary approval to buy 75,000 acres of farmland there.

NBA Finals 2012: Lebron, Wade and the Heat Bounce Back for a Win in Game 2

The NBA finals series heads into a tie between the experienced Miami Heat and the youthful Oklahoma City Thunder after the Heat's 100-96 win Thursday night. The Miami Heat?s big three of Bosh, James, and Wade against the Thunder?s big three of Durant, Westbrook, and Harden. In Game 1 Wade had 19 points, 8 assist and was 7-19 from the field in the loss. LeBron James had a series high of 30 points. Chris Bosh had 10 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. So how did they not come up with the win? I would say because of Kevin Durant and OKC?s offense.

The Miami Heat are a fast break team and are use to playing in fast transitions with quick long court passes and slam dunks. However, the Thunder held the Heat to 4 fast break points, while OKC had 24. After Game 1 the real question was if Kevin Durant and the Thunder offense could keep it up. Could LeBron James guard Durant? Game 2 gave us all the answers.?

The Heat came out like an avalanche, crushing the Thunder with an 18-2 lead. With Bosh back in the starting lineup, the thrilling matchup one of the most thrilling games to watch to date. Dwayne Wade and the Heat started strong. I don?t think the Thunder were quit ready for the heat Miami brought to the court on Thursday. In transition, OKC was very sloppy and had multiple turnovers. Durant could not get into a rhythm and Westbrook was just playing his own game. It seemed like the Heat wanted it more and it definitely showed in their play. Durant was in foul trouble early, while on the other side of the court Wade was using the pick and roll to the Heat?s advantage. The first quarter ended with OKC shooting 5-20 from the field and the Heat leading 27-15. The Big Three of the Heat showed up huge in the first half. Shane Battier boosted the lead of the Heat multiple times with big three pointers. Serge Ibaka was not giving up on the defensive side of the ball though. Ibaka ended the game with a total of 5 blocked shots.

As the second half approached I was thinking could the Heat hold off OKC in the upcoming half as they did in the first? LeBron was taking it to the basket from the base line like champ and it seemed like he could not be guarded in the paint. All the starters from the Heat showed up with furious passion to win this game. Miami held the Thunder to zero fast break points in the first half, while the Heat scored 10. It was clear the James' and Wade?s key for scoring in Game 2 was driving to the basket and not just settling for an iffy jumper. If it was not for Serge Ibaka?s defense and James Harden?s 21 points, most which came early in the game, OKC would have been in a deeper hole then they already were after the first half.?

In the third quarter the Heat lead by 15 points, but I was sensing a comeback in the midst for the Thunder. Even though Battier was 5-7 in Game 2, it was not over for Oklahoma City. With a big three pointer by Kevin Durant, the Thunder cut the lead down to 10 points. By the end of the third the score was 78-67, Miami. You can never count out Durant because in the fourth quarter he has played like there is no tomorrow. In the fourth he and the Thunder cut down the deficit to 8 points with a promising comeback in the making.

Westbrook added to the comeback with a big three to cut the deficit to 5 points with six minutes left. Durant answered the Heat runs by being 7-7 from the field in the beginning of the fourth quarter. It was plain to see now that the Thunder were playing their game and not letting the game play them. Westbrook and Durant sparked the fourth quarter and were finally playing like a duo. At the end of the fourth quarter the Thunder got a big steal and the clutch three pointer from Durant brought the Thunder within 2 with 7.1 seconds remaining.

Now here?s where it gets a little tricky. As the replay shows, Durant was fouled by James but no whistle was blown. Durant missed the shot. LeBron came up big when his team needed it most, and went 12-12 from the line during the game. Wade walked off the court with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assist. James added to that with 32 points. The Heat will host the next game in south Florida on Sunday, June 17th at 8:00 p.m. ET. The Heat dominated the whole game, but the Thunder were relentless and kept chipping away at the score.

Now, the real question is who will want it more in Game 3?

Sharapova defeats Errani for French Open title

PARIS (AP) ? The picture she posed for at the beginning foreshadowed a mismatch in the making: 6-foot-2 Maria Sharapova standing at the net, towering over an opponent nearly 10 inches smaller than her.

The pictures snapped at the end told a different story: Sharapova, down on her knees after a tougher-than-expected win, head buried in her hands, celebrating after completing a comeback three years in the making and cementing her name among the greatest in tennis.

The Russian star won the French Open on Saturday, defeating her tiny Italian opponent, Sara Errani, 6-3, 6-2 in the final at Roland Garros to complete the career Grand Slam.

"I believe in my game," Sharapova said. "I think that's one of the reasons I'm sitting here with my fourth one and winning Roland Garros, because I always believed I could be a better player."

Second-seeded Sharapova, who was guaranteed of moving to No. 1 in the rankings regardless of the result, jumped to a quick 4-0 lead against the 21st-seeded Errani, who was in her first Grand Slam final.

But Errani battled back on a cool, blustery day in Paris, turning what had the makings of a blowout into an 89-minute endurance contest, filled with long rallies that forced Sharapova to find another gear. Eventually, Sharapova's bigger serve and bigger groundstrokes wore down the 5-4? Errani.

"She won many points with her serve or in the first two or three shots," Errani said. "It was difficult. I couldn't play long points like I wanted to play."

When Errani netted a short backhand on the third match point, Sharapova dropped gingerly to the clay to start the celebration, then reached back and looked heavenward ? a long, hard road back to the top finally capped with the only major title that had eluded her.

Sharapova won the trophy at Roland Garros about three years after dropping as low as 126th in the rankings after shoulder surgery that threatened her career. She rededicated herself to the game and made a special effort to improve on red clay, the surface on which she moved to 16-0 this year.

She did it knowing it wasn't really necessary. She's a millionaire many times over, her endorsement cachet full ? as comfortable on the red carpet as she now is on the red clay.

"I've had so many outs and I could've said I don't need this," she said. "I could've said, 'I've got the money, I've got the fame, I've got the career victories and Grand Slams.' But when your love for the game is bigger than those things, that's when you continue to get up."

She added this year's French Open title to championships at Wimbledon in 2004, the U.S. Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008 to become only the 10th woman to win all four major tournaments, joining players such as Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Serena Williams and Billie Jean King.

It was Sharapova's 27th overall career title. She'll be back at No. 1 in the WTA rankings Monday for the first time since June 2008, though this win reminded her of a scene a few years before that.

Back in 2004, Sharapova was 17, just becoming a name on the tennis scene when she swept into Roland Garros and made a surprise trip to the quarterfinals. A preview of things to come: A month later, she won Wimbledon and everyone knew her name.

"I thought when I won Wimbledon at 17, that would be the most treasured moment in my career," she said. "But when I fell down on my knees today, I realized this is extremely special, even more so."

The lopsided score in the final wasn't all that unexpected, given the size, experience and power advantage Sharapova brought to her first meeting with Errani. But really, the score didn't tell the whole story.

Errani, who won the doubles title Friday and will move to the top 10 in singles for the first time Monday, struck a victory for any athlete, from the pros to the playground, who has ever looked up at an opponent towering over them by a foot and said, "Hey, maybe I can do this."

Despite spinning serves in at 70-80 mph, while Sharapova was topping out in the 115 mph range, Errani played Sharapova toe-to-toe for the better part of the hour and a half, especially after she overcame the jitters in the shaky opening games.

Eventually, Sharapova's power game won out but Errani fought to the bitter end ? showing the savvy to hit two drop shots that won points in the final game, each of them sending Sharapova scrambling toward the net, only to arrive a split second late.

Still, Sharapova finished the match with 25 winners from the baseline compared to four for Errani, while committing 29 unforced errors to 11 for her opponent. Sharapova also led in aces, 6-0, including one that set up the third and final match point ? the one match point that had been missing in an otherwise stellar career.

"It's a long journey," she said. "It started from a very young age and it's not over yet. I'm not sitting here and saying I'm done because I'm far from it. I have a lot more in me to achieve."
