Pope to celebrate mass in Mexico

Pope Benedict XVI was to celebrate open-air mass on Sunday as he calls for non-violence and respect for human life during his landmark visit to Mexico overshadowed by complaints from victims of sexual abuse.

The mass, beneath a towering statue of Christ the King in the regional Bicentennial Park, is expected to be the highlight of the pontiff's stay on Mexican soil.

Mexican authorities have promised maximum security, with some 5,400 security forces deployed, while the archbishop of Leon even called on local drug gangs to call a truce.

On Saturday, crowds waved yellow and white Vatican flags as the Popemobile arrived in the steep streets of the colonial city of Guanajuato from neighboring Leon, in predominantly Catholic, central Mexico, where the pope is staying for three nights.

The 84-year-old pontiff, on his first visit to Spanish-speaking Latin America, celebrated a private mass Saturday before meeting with President Felipe Calderon late in the afternoon.

The presidency said they had discussed a broad range of international issues, including the combat against organized crime and climate change.

Shortly before the meeting, victims of sexual abuse accused the Vatican of protecting a notorious Mexican priest for decades, and expressed frustration that Pope Benedict XVI would not meet them in Mexico, at a news conference.

A group including alleged victims of abuse by Marcial Maciel, the late founder of the influential Legion of Christ religious order, presented a book that they say proves that Vatican officials ignored crimes committed by Maciel.

The pope has met with abuse victims in many foreign countries but has no plans to do so in Mexico.

Benedict referred to the mistreatment of children, without specifically mentioning Catholic pedophilia scandals of recent decades, in a speech to dozens of children from the balcony of Guanajuato's ornate Casa Del Conde Rul, where he earlier met with Calderon.

"I wish to lift up my voice, inviting everyone to protect and to care for children, so that nothing may extinguish their smile, but that they may live in peace and look to the future with confidence," the pope said.

In a country where violence is an open wound for many families -- with some 50,000 deaths blamed on drug violence in five years -- the pope also warned young people against revenge.

"The disciple of Jesus does not respond to evil with evil," he said.

In only his second trip to the world's most Catholic continent, the pope is in Mexico before traveling to communist Cuba on Monday.

Thousands of people waited outside his lodging in Leon Saturday in a bid to get a glimpse of the pontiff, who is following in the footsteps of John Paul II who came here five times.

"We could hardly sleep because of the emotion and now we can see the pope," said Xochitl Alvarez, an indigenous woman who travelled hundreds of miles (kilometers) from southern Mexico.

Benedict comes to a Mexican church facing challenges including legalized abortion and gay marriage in the Mexican capital and a drop in Catholic numbers in the world's second-largest Catholic nation -- with 84 percent of the population baptized.

Although he has not addressed particular challenges to the church, Benedict has called for respect for human dignity.

"This dignity is expressed especially in the fundamental right to freedom of religion, in its full meaning and integrity," he said.

The visit comes amid debate over new legislation, which Calderon's government is backing, to end restrictions on religious ceremonies in public places and a ban on religious involvement in politics.

In Cuba, Benedict XVI will seek to follow in the footsteps of John Paul II, who was credited with strengthening the church's relationship to the state and urging the communist island to open up, though it remains highly isolated.

Benedict said that Marxism "no longer corresponds to reality" and called for "new models" amid so far timid changes in the communist regime, on the journey to Mexico.

Cuban dissidents have meanwhile held a series of protests aimed at pressuring the pope into tackling the government on human rights.

Benedict hopes to encourage religious fervor after more than 40 years of official atheism ended in the early 1990s.

Obama confronts nuke threat on N. Korea front line

OBSERVATION POST OUELLETTE, South Korea (AP) ? Razor-wire close to the border, President Barack Obama on Sunday paid his first visit to the tense zone separating North and South Korea amid new nuclear tensions. He told American troops stationed nearby they are protectors of "freedom's frontier."

Obama shook hands and spoke briefly in the dining hall at a U.S. military camp just outside the 2.5-mile-wide Demilitarized Zone, then walked into the heavily patrolled no-man's land to tour a small post where South Korean forces patrol just 100 yards from the demarcation line.

The president, positioned behind bulletproof glass, peered through binoculars across the line that has bisected the Korean peninsula for 60 years. He spent about 10 minutes at the observation post, looking first toward North Korea, then back to the South.

It was an unmistakable show of force to communist North Korea and its new leader at a time of diplomatic standoff. Obama underscored the Cold War symbolism by making the tour his first order of business ahead of a gathering of world leaders pledged to keep nuclear materials safe. Nuclear-armed North Korea will not attend.

The U.S. is threatening to cancel planned food aid to the North over its announcement that it will launch a long-range rocket next month, news that overshadows the gathering of world leaders committed to nuclear security that Obama will attend in Seoul. Obama was holding bilateral talks with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak later in the day, followed by a news conference.

"I could not be prouder of what you're doing," Obama told smiling American troops at Camp Bonifas at the edge of the DMZ. Obama said the same is true at every U.S. military post, but "there's something about this spot in particular."

"You guys are ... at freedom's frontier. When you think about the transformation that has taken place in South Korea during my lifetime, it is directly attributable to this long line of soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen who were willing to create the space and the opportunity for freedom and prosperity," Obama said.

Obama's visit takes place as North Koreans mark the end of the 100-day mourning period for longtime leader Kim Jong Il, who died of a heart attack in December. Since Kim's death, son Kim Jong Un has been paying a series of high-profile visits to military units and made his own trip to the "peace village" of Panmunjom inside the DMZ earlier this month.

"The contrast between South Korea and North Korea could not be clearer, could not be starker," Obama told the troops.

That was a reference to the political freedom and prosperity in democratic South Korea, and the repression and desperate food shortages of the North.

In the midst of an election year focused on economic concerns at home, Obama has designed a rare Asia visit that features time in just one country. He'll use much of the time to keep pressure on North Korea to back off the planned rocket launch and return to disarmament talks.

The South Korean and U.S. militaries have found that North Korea has moved a long-range rocket to its northwestern launch site in preparation for its launch, South Korean Defense Ministry and Joint Chiefs of Staff officials said Sunday. The officials ? speaking on condition of anonymity citing department rules ? refused to provide further details.

Obama's visit to the border separating the Korean peninsula is the fourth by a U.S. president. Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush all visited the DMZ; other U.S. officials regularly go there.

The border zone is a Cold War anachronism, a legacy of the uncertain armistice that ended the Korean War nearly 60 years ago. Hundreds of thousands of troops stand ready on both sides of the border zone, which is littered with land mines and encased in razor wire. Obama officials said the goal is to thank U.S. and South Korean military members and show U.S. resolve from "the front line of democracy" on the peninsula.

The United States has more than 28,000 troops in South Korea.

North Korea plans to launch a satellite using a long-range rocket next month, which the U.S. and other powers say would violate a U.N. ban on nuclear and missile activity because the same technology could be used for long-range missiles. Taken by surprise, the U.S. warned that a deal to resume stalled food aid to the North could be jeopardized if North Korea goes ahead.

The U.S. considers the rocket launch practice for a ballistic missile test and a violation of North Korea's international responsibilities. The planned launch is yet another setback for the United States in years of on-again, off-again attempts to launch real negotiations. The announcement also played into Republican criticism that Obama had been too quick to jump at a new chance for talks with the North Koreans.

Campaign politics surrounding a sitting president typically subside when he is abroad, although Obama's posture toward threats to America will be scrutinized by his rivals.

The timing comes as daily economic worries, not foreign ones, are driving the concerns of American voters. Yet the setting does give Obama a few days to hold forth on the world stage while, back home, Republican presidential candidates keep battling each other.

The goal of the large gathering of world leaders is to secure nuclear material and prevent it from being smuggled to states or groups intent on mass destruction. Progress has been uneven since 2010, when Obama set an ambitious goal of locking down vulnerable nuclear materials by 2014. No breakthroughs are expected now.

Obama has called nuclear terrorism the gravest threat the United States and the world may face. North Korea is a prime suspect in the proliferation of some nuclear know-how, along with missiles that could be used to deliver weapons of mass destruction. Iran is suspected in the arming of terrorists with non-nuclear weaponry, and the U.S. and other nations suspect Iran's nuclear energy program could be converted to build a bomb.

Recycled Toilets Make Path Green

60-Second Science60-Second Science | Energy & Sustainability

The Meador-Kansas-Ellis Trail became the first certified sustainable road under the Greenroads rating system, in part because it contains recycled commodes. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

Is the attempt to make environmentally friendly roadways doomed to wind up in the toilet? Actually, it may be the other way around. To earn a green certification, the Meador-Kansas-Ellis Trail in Bellingham, Washington, included 400 recycled commodes in the concrete.

Greenroads is a new rating system, developed at the University of Washington, which judges the sustainability of roads and road construction projects. Under the system, projects must incorporate 11 specific features, such as dealing with waste from the construction process, as well as some optional practices, which in the case of the Meador Kansas Ellis Trail included recycling.

The toilet interment helped the project win the first official Greenroads nod, earning a silver certification. About 30 percent of the pavement consists of recycled concrete and, yes, crushed-up toilets, nicknamed ?poticrete.?

But this project?s sustainability relies on more than old thrones. The Trail?s porous concrete prevents excessive run-off; it?s illuminated with low-energy lighting; and its mere presence encourages bicycle and foot traffic. These green features mean that sustainable roadways can be more than a pipe dream.

Making The Best Choices For Ezine Advertising | Internet Home ...

The main difference between internet entrepreneurs and small business owners who succeed online and those that do not is having the correct information, awareness of powerful web business-building resources and most importantly taking action on this knowledge.

Ezine advertising has quietly existed since the beginning, and it remains a viable and profitable advertising technique to this day. Just like any other method, you have to prepare to do it which implies executing the proper steps to choose the best advertiser among other things. You can avoid a lot of aggravation by knowing how to select an ezine that will bring you the best returns. Maybe one of the most challenging aspects of teaching others about business on the net is rank beginners do not know anything at all about it. We remember learning about, Clickopp, and it took a while plus gaining first-hand experience before we really felt comfortable with it.

So it can be assumed that incomplete knowledge on that will exist, and that just complicates the learning process.

We know you want to do well, so just keep in mind that even the following tips will not be all you need to know or should know. That is one aspect of internet business that we love; there is always something more that can be learned. Once you have your initial campaigns underway, then you really have to pay attention to what is going on, and that is why testing and tracking are so valuable.

You usually can place your service request with an ezine right there on their site with a submission form or something similar. However, not every site will have that in place, but they obviously should have at least a contact form. A lack of response to any email from you may have a justifiable reason aside from not having their act together. This is just a very simple test, or more of a probe, and the results can be very revealing about who you are dealing with. Those ezine publishers who take the time and effort to make sure things flow smoothly are the one who will take care of your ads. We are not quite done with our discussion, and if you are like us the gears would be turning with fresh ideas. Very many online businesses and marketers have found Wealthy Affiliate to be useful; yet we know there are many who cannot or will not use it for some reason. Just how far do you want to take things online? That is always a valid and important question to ask. If you are like us, then you seriously consider any and all possible avenues for making more money. Any business on or off the internet can benefit tremendously by expanding their marketing and advertising. But in reality the most successful people have worked to build and learn as much as possible.

There are times when you will see ezines that offer free promotions, such as ads, and that is great so you can get a taste of how they operate. It is smart to look for every way that can give you a chance to discover more about how they operate, their traffic and conversions. You?re doing nothing but using the free classified feature as a yardstick to test the waters before going with the paid solo ads. One thing you need to realize concerning this discussion about Michael Rasmussen is it can become as effective as you want; it depends on how you scale your promotions. One thing worthy of note is the difference in the attitudes business owners bring to the table. We each have our own unique thinking habits and patterns that essentially become our reality everyday, and the influence they exert on your business is astounding. We would urge you to work to avoid taking things personally or negatively, and you can turn your business situation around in a number of ways including working with your mindset. There are so many ways that restrictive thinking and behavior will impede success, and the cool thing is that you can reverse that trend. Things like challenges are just your obstacles to overcome, and you can make up your mind on your own.

There are compelling reasons to go with ezine advertising when you need to get good exposure to your offers. You may have to be patient until you find the best fit for your business, but that is just how it is for so many things on the net. So what are you waiting for? There are plenty of opportunities for you to profit from ezine advertising, so find the right publication and place an ad.

Importance of Self Improvement | Anyameten

Self improvement is an important way to improve and develop our work ethics and make more out of yourself and your lives. Making decisions whenever required is a must. No matter what the situation is, whether you agree or disagree, you should be prepared to take the decision. We should ensure that whatever decision we made should be to our best interest in that situation. These are the real choices if self-respect is important to us.

There are chances of promotion for any position in an organization from time to time. Any person who works hard, eagerly waiting for a promotion and is willing to take up the position will be surely noticed by the people. One must be prepared to ignore bad attitudes of colleagues or peers who does take the easy way in doing the minimum amount of work required to get by. Through Self Improvement, this can be accomplished and can make our lives much better.

Some people please themselves by doing as little as possible. Such people just beat the system or try to win over their bosses. And these people waste a lot of time complaining about peer?s attitude, petty office politics and other petty things etc. People with such a nature certainly lack the courage and ambition to make changes and probably never will do so.

Contradictory to the above there are people who are ambitious and courageous and put their efforts to the best use. Sometimes these people?s efforts are not recognized and are ignored by their bosses. In such cases moving on the is the best choice. There is no doubt that people with such ambition and work ethic will find a position or job where their efforts are recognized.

Keeping yourself updated with latest information, learning new skills and techniques and keeping yourself motivated are few things that would help in self-improvement. Now it doesn?t matter if you wish to work your way up in the corporate world, or start your own business, what matters is having strong work ethic.

Gold Investments - Some of the Hottest Alternative Investment Opportunities Today

Gold Investments - Some of the Hottest Alternative Investment Opportunities Today

Gold investments are among the best alternative investments currently available, especially in the context of the economic insecurity that still affects many world economies.

Why It?s Worth Investing in Gold

Gold is seen as a great investment whenever there is the threat of a raising inflation, as it helps people convert volatile assets into a precious metal that will continue to be valuable regardless of what befalls the economy.

But gold also makes for a possibly good investment for those who seek to get a nice return on their investments. Short term investments in gold, however, do not tend to be as rewarding as other investments, since the price of gold is somewhat more stable than that of say silver, which rises and falls more often and more significantly.

But when it comes to long-term alternative investments, gold is considered by many to be unrivalled. That?s because gold has been since time immemorial prized for its beauty and value, and will continue to be so for years to come regardless of what happens with the financial markets.

Ads by GoogleUnless an unimaginably vast deposit of gold is found soon ? which is unlikely, considering that right known gold deposits are actually dwindling ? gold will continue to retain its high value, which makes the precious metal ideal for an alternative investment.

Gold is venerated and desired and these contribute to making it one of the most secure things to invest it. And besides, when you invest in gold you can actually own the material, which may give you a pleasure than not all the money in the world can buy.

Gold?s Rivals: Silver and Platinum

Gold clearly dominates the other precious metals. Silver is more volatile and much less valuable, its market being much smaller than that of gold. This makes silver investments potentially good for quick gains, but ultimately unreliable for long-term serious investments. And besides, silver takes more storage space than gold.

Platinum, on the other hand, is more valuable, but also more difficult to handle. Investments in platinum are infamous for their high risk, and only few experts really carry them out. What?s more, unlike gold, platinum is hard to convert into cash.

How to Invest

Gold investments can be some of the most rewarding alternative investments, especially when they are significant. But even investing in small quantities of gold can be rewarding.

You can invest in gold by buying gold bullion or gold coins. Alternatively, you can buy stock in gold mining or gold producing companies, as well as gold futures contracts. Some say though that the best gold investments are those in which you buy and own the gold yourself.

Investing in gold is definitely one of the hottest alternative investment opportunities today. But to invest successfully you need to compare investment opportunities and to go with the one your calculations point you to.

Sunday's Obituary: Cyrus P. Baker, 1883 ... - Climbing My Family Tree

It always pays to look for obituaries in small towns where your ancestor may have lived many years prior to their death.? Many people in town might still know them and would like to hear news of them.? That was the case with Cyrus P. Baker.? He moved away from Indiana County, PA in 1869, yet when he died in 1883 they still ran an obituary on him.? Many members of this family suffered from consumption, as it appears he also may have. How horrible to have died so far from home, apparently without any family nearby.

?From the Indiana Weekly Messenger, Indiana, PA, dated 11 April 1883.

Death of Cyrus Baker.

Mr. Cyrus P. Baker, of Lawrence, Kansas, died of consumption at Albuquerque, New Mexico on March 28th. He was a son of Mr. James Baker, formerly of Rayne Twp, this county and who moved to Tennessee in 1869 and from thence to Lawrence, Kansas, in 1876, where he still resides. The deceased, while in Kansas, suffered from lung difficulty and started west in the hopes that the trip would benefit his health. He first went to Colorado and thence to New Mexico and from there he journeyed to California. But he got no relief and started back to his home in Kansas and reached the town above mentioned where he died. Though surrounded by strangers he was kindly cared for. He leaves a wife and one child to mourn the loss of a kind husband and affectionate parent. He was a printer by trade and visited this place some two years since.

Rihanna says collaboration with Brown 'made sense'

NEW YORK (AP) ? People have been scratching their heads over Rihanna's musical collaboration with Chris Brown, but she says it "made sense" and it's "innocent."

Brown appears on a remix of her song "Birthday Cake" and she appears on a remix of his "Turn up the Music." Their music union is noteworthy because Brown beat up Rihanna three years ago and is still on probation for the assault.

Rihanna says it was her idea for Brown to appear on her song because he's "the hottest R&B artist" right now. He then asked her to be on his song.

She says the partnership allowed fans to come together, adding: "There shouldn't be a divide. ... It's music, and it's innocent."

She made the comments to Ryan Seacrest on his radio show on KIIS-FM in Los Angeles.

When it comes to business websites, many small business owners worry a great deal about their contact details, but really concerns about not having an impressive office address can be solved by renting a virtual office. However, if you choose a poor domain name this can be a serious barrier to the promotion of your business.

When it comes to deciding on a domain name for your website, you need to have a clear idea of how your customers think and how they go about searching online, as your domain name will be crucial to your chances of successfully marketing your business on the internet. You also need to choose something that will show up well on search engines, meaning your name needs to be memorable in the first place, but you also want to try and secure those internet users referred to as ?low hanging fruit? ? like those who have typed in a close misspelling of your name. You should also consider whether you want a national or international extension (.com, .co.uk) for your domain name.

When it comes to maximising the potential of internet searching, the best way to achieve this is to ensure that you have the standard term that is used to describe your particular product or service. An example of this would be Nurofen ? which has Painrelief.co.uk. This is important, as over half of those who search online do so under the term that actually describes what they need, rather than putting in the names of specific companies.

Hague court issues its first guilty verdict against Congo warlord Lubanga

The guilty verdict against Lubanga will draw new attention to pending cases against 20 other indictees, including Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, the focus of Invisible Children's Kony2012 video campaign.?

The International Criminal Court at the Hague, Netherlands, has found Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga guilty of conscripting and using child soldiers during the 1998-2003 conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This is the first-ever verdict for the Hague court, and one that is likely to give credibility to future court cases filed against other ICC indictees such as Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and Uganda?s cultish warlord Joseph Kony. Mr. Kony, founder of the murderous Lord?s Resistance Army, is the first man to be charged with war crimes by the ICC, and has recently become focus of an Internet campaign launched by the American activist group Invisible Children, urging Kony?s arrest for abduction of child soldiers.

From the courtroom, Rachel Irwin, a reporter for the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, tweeted the results of the verdict, noting that Lubanga ?showed no emotion [but] nodded at those seated in the gallery.?

Human rights groups hailed Lubanga?s verdict as a validation of the ICC, which has taken criticism for its lengthy process, and for its penchant for focusing on African war crimes, rather than those in the Middle East, Asia, or the richer countries of the West.

Human Rights Watch said that the Lubanga verdict should be a warning to other military commanders, including Lubanga's own co-accused, Bosco Ntaganda,?who is currently a general in the Congo Army in Goma.?

?The verdict against Lubanga is a victory for the thousands of children forced to fight in Congo?s brutal wars,? said G?raldine Mattioli-Zeltner, international justice advocacy director at Human Rights Watch, in a statement. ?Military commanders in Congo and elsewhere should take notice of the ICC?s powerful message: using children as a weapon of war is a serious crime that can lead them to the dock.?

Don Kraus, chief executive officer of Citizens for Global Solutions, greeted the decision, saying in a statement, ?Lubanga?s guilty verdict is a landmark moment in the short history of the Court.?For the first time in the history of humanity, nations have come together and established a permanent means of holding tyrants and human rights abusers accountable, while providing a fair system of justice, even for the most heinous crimes.?This is how we build a safer, more secure world.??

Everyone Has The Features Yahoo?s Suing Facebook For: Here They Are

Yahoo Stabs The Internet In The BackYahoo reared its patent troll head this week, and it's not just Facebook that has reason to be worried -- at least, judging by the extremely broad features that it's being targeted for. Yahoo could easily sue Twitter, Pinterest, Google and many other popular web services whenever it thinks it would be most lucrative since their products are also covered by Yahoo's patents. Rather than give you the jargon-filled abstracts of the patents Yahoo is suing Facebook with, let's look at what features they pertain to on Facebook and across the web.

Mexico's Carlos Slim to back internet TV network

Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim is financing an internet TV network that will include an interview show with former television host Larry King, according to network's website.

The network, which will be called Ora.tv, will feature on-demand content and will produce "a wide range of programs that transcend traditional formats," the website said.

Slim's America Movil, one of the world's biggest telecommunications firms, will fund the station that will be led by Jon Housman, who was formerly the president of digital journalism at Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, Ora.tv's website said.

Reuters reported in January that Slim, whom Forbes says is the world's richest man, and King were in talks to start a media venture.

Slim is the main provider of pay-television in Latin America, where he offers cable and satellite services to around 13 million customers, and he also owns a stake in the New York Times Co.

Ora.tv will be launched this year but it does not have a start date yet.

VEVO launches redesign with Facebook in mind

With TV screens and social networking in mind, the music video site VEVO has launched a significant redesign.

The new VEVO features a bigger player, continuous playback of videos and personalized playlists synced with user iTunes libraries and Facebook pages.

VEVO, which is co-owned by Sony Music and Universal Music, debuted the new design Friday.

The Facebook integration will likely further stoke rumors that the social network is interested in purchasing VEVO. Michael Cerda, senior vice president of product at VEVO, declined to comment on those reports.

Cerda said the new VEVO was designed to transition the site from a "snackable" website to "a personalized, social and long form experience."

Cerda also said VEVO is planning to do "a lot" to migrate to TV screens, a prospect that will likely further comparisons of VEVO ? in its focus on videos and live performance? to a young MTV. VEVO is currently piped to TVs via Boxee and Google TV, but Cerda said VEVO will soon be connected to "other connected devices" like the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation.

In January, VEVO had about 717 million streams, according to ComScore.

Amanda Clayton, lottery winner, defends food stamps. Michigan disagrees.

Amanda Clayton made headlines for acknowledging that she still received $200 in monthly food assistance after winning $1 million in Michigan lottery money. Legislation could now pass.

Michigan could become the first state to enact legislation that polices the access that lottery winners have to assistance programs ? after two cases have come to light in which such an individual continued using food stamps after winning at least $1 million.

This week, Amanda Clayton of the Detroit area made headlines for acknowledging that she still received $200 in monthly food assistance after winning $1 million in state lottery money last September. Following an uproar, she was revoked of her benefits Wednesday.

Last year, Leroy Fick of Bay County, Mich., told a television reporter that he still used food stamps despite winning $2 million from the state lottery. Mr. Fick was acting within any laws and regulations, his lawyer reportedly argued.

The Fick case prompted the legislation that is now moving its way through the state Senate. The bill, which would prevent lottery winners from continuing in federal and state assistance programs, passed the House last month.

If the legislation passes, the Michigan Lottery would be required to send the names of anyone winning prizes over $1,000 to the state Department of Human Services, which would then have to cross-reference those names against those receiving public assistance.

?State assistance should only be granted to individuals who truly need it,? said state Rep. Dale Zorn (R) of Lansing, who sponsored the bill.

It is unclear if Ms. Clayton acted illegally. According to eligibility requirements posted on Michigan?s Department of Human Services website, wages, self-employment earnings, rental income, child support, Social Security benefits, and veterans benefits are all countable income. Lottery winnings are not in that list.

Human Services Director Maura Corrigan released a statement Wednesday, saying that her department ?does not currently have the ability to verify a person?s lottery winnings in determining benefit eligibility? and that policy dictates relying ?on clients being forthcoming about their actual financial status.? Not doing so results in a criminal investigation, she said.

Moreover, eligibility reform is required at the federal level, says US Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D) of Michigan, who is chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. A reform measure, she says, will be in a new farm bill due this fall, which is expected to set America?s agriculture and nutrition program policies for five years.

Eligibility rules for food-stamp programs, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), are drawn up at the federal level. The program is also federally funded, but administered by the states. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures in Washington, states cannot change eligibility requirements, but they are responsible for determining and verifying eligibility.

States are subject to fines if their error rates continue higher than the national average. In 2010, 3 percent of SNAP payments were made to ineligible households or were in amounts considered excessive.

In its report for fiscal year 2009, the Michigan Inspector General?s Office reported 2,617 cases of fraud in the state?s food-assistance program, a 10 percent decrease since 2006. The most common type of fraud was selling benefit cards for cash or other illegal goods.

According to state data, the total number of recipients in Michigan?s food-assistance program reached 2.4 million in 2011, resulting in $3.1 billion in payments. In 2010, 2.3 million people received benefits, costing $2.8 billion.

As for Clayton, she won $1 million in the state?s ?Make Me Rich!? game. According to The Detroit News, she took home $500,000, which she used to buy a new home and car.

The uproar over her winnings started this week after she told Detroit television affiliate WDIV that she was ?struggling? to make ends meet.

?I thought they would cut me off, but since they didn?t, I thought maybe it was OK because I?m not working,? she said. ?I feel that it?s OK because I have no income, and I have bills to pay. I have two houses.?

Senator Stabenow said in a statement: ?At a time when so many out-of-work Michigan families are in real need of assistance, it?s outrageous for people to cheat and defraud the system like this.?

Tips For Choosing A Retirement Community | Article Museum

If you really find this article helpful Give it a PLUS from below and help us to spread it.

Are you preparing for your retirement? Once you have determined that your finances are in excellent standing, you may be concerned with your living arrangements. Despite the fact that many retirees choose to stay right where they are, many more opt for retirement home communities. If you are interested in doing so, you will want to choose your retirement community wisely.

The first step in choosing a retirement community involves familiarizing yourself with all of your options. Did you know that you have multiple choices? You do. Retirement communities come in a number of different formats.

Independent retirement communities and facilities are the most well loved choice among retirees who are in excellent health. These are establishments where you are essentially on your own. It is like you are just renting an apartment. Often times, the only onsite staff members are office workers, maintenance workers, and security personnel. Many independent retirement communities are designed to provide you with ease of living. This includes making onsite activities, like exercise classes and arts and crafts, available.

Helped living communities and facilities are ideal for retirees whose health is just starting to worsen. If you need help on occasion, an helped living retirement community may be perfect for you. The help provided does vary, but you can get help with going for a walk outdoors, cooking, preparing for your day, or taking your medication.

Nursing homes and facilities are another retirement option for those poor in health. Nursing homes are essentially hospitals with a more laidback environment. They are designed for individuals who cannot care for themselves. If you are researching nursing homes, you are likely a family member of the retiree, not him or her. When residing in a nursing home, patients are provided with around-the-clock care. This is a nice alternative to living with family or constant home nurse care.

Continuing care retirement facilities and communities are another option that you have. This option is one that is increasing in popularity. Continuing care retirement facilities and communities essentially provide residents with independent living, helped living, and around-the-clock care, depending on the resident?s needs. These facilities are fantastic for retirees who are concerned with their health and finances. Yes, your health may be excellent now, but there are no guarantees with the future. Relocating and putting stress on your family isn?t advised. That is why continuing care facilities are often recommended.

When making your retirement community and care choice, it is vital examine your needs. Do you need help with day-to-day activities? Are you suffering from a debilitating disease that will only continue to get worse? If so, you should examine helped living communities, nursing homes, or continuing care facilities.

Next, examine your retirement community wants. Do you want to meet new people and develop new friendships? If so, make sure that the retirement community or facility is well populated. Also, examine onsite activities, as they make it simpler to meet new people.

Finally, examine cost and location. Always choose a retirement community that you can afford. If you are the relative of a retiree who needs care, be sure to keep quality in mind. Affordability is vital, but not if quality must be compromised. As for location, choose a retirement community that is nearby your family. As you age, you will need the like and support of your family more.

This was very bland. I didn't like this very much. Will not be making it again.

Towing my weight: Partnering with commercial shipping for whale and dolphin research

I didn?t give much thought to shipping until I started doing my PhD on whales and dolphins. Food magically appeared onto store shelves out of thin air, where I bought it. I don?t think most of us give much thought to where our food comes from, but once I started paying attention how things get around, it was hard to stop. This is especially true on a remote tropical island, like Hawaii. Here, every once in a while, certain foods aren?t to be found for love or money. My steps echo in the empty bread isle, and when I beg for just one slice of delicious whole grain the store employee will say, ?Sorry, no can. Bread shipment comes Tuesday.?

About 85% of the food consumed in Hawaii is imported from somewhere else. Most food arrives in Honolulu on a container ship, which is then unloaded and redistributed into shipping barges. These barges are pulled by tugboats to what are known here as the ?neighbor islands? of Kauai, Molokai, Maui, Lanai, and the Big Island. The shipping barges are very different than the container ships. First of all, they can?t get anywhere on their own ? they need a tugboat to pull them. The tugs I work on have a maximum travel speed of about 8 knots (10 miles per hour), which is quite a bit slower than the typical 20-25 knot travel speed of a container ship.

Tug boats pushing a barge against the dock. Photo by Alexis Rudd

A tugboat towing a barge is optimally designed for my type of research, which uses underwater sound to find whales and dolphins. I record these underwater sounds through a hydrophone, which hangs off the back of a barge. Sound goes up a cable from the hydrophone, and is recorded onto a custom electronic recorder, called an EAR (Ecological Acoustic Recorder [A]). The barge is towed from a cable, about 900 feet behind the tugboat. This distance gets my hydrophone far away from the noise of the tug. Another advantage is that tug boats travel back and forth between the Hawaiian Islands twice a week, which means that if I had a couple of handy clones to share the work I could collect acoustic data from Kauai to the Big Island one hundred times per year. Since I don?t have any clones (or interns, for that matter), I only go out every 11-14 days. I?ve been on a tugboat 74 days in the last year, which, according to the crew, is about enough for me to get hired.

Why bother spending so much time on a tugboat listening for cetaceans (whales and dolphins), especially in Hawaii? The truth is, we actually don?t know much about cetaceans in Hawaii. Most of the knowledge of Hawaiian cetaceans actually concentrates on a few well-studied species: the humpback whale and the Hawaiian spinner dolphin. These species are frequently found near to shore or in calm waters: spinner dolphins ?rest? in near-shore bays, and humpback whales spend the winter in Maui?s calm western lee.

Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins photographed from the bow of the tugboat near the Big Island. Photo by Alexis Rudd

In addition to these well-studied species are 23 other species that occur in Hawaii but are less well studied, such as false killer and minke whales [B],. These remaining deep-water species are less well known simply because they don?t often hang out in nice, calm water close to the shore. The water offshore in Hawaii can be dangerously rough. Wind and swell builds up across half the Pacific Ocean, creating the famous surf of Jaws and Pipeline. These conditions are too dangerous to take a small (westward lees of the islands (the prevailing wind in Hawaii is from the East).

The Big Island of Hawaii creates the largest lee, allowing researchers to get far out to sea. In contrast to these relatively calm leeward waters, the conditions between the main Hawaiian Islands are, to use a surfer term, gnarly. Wind traveling across the Pacific Ocean is diverted around the volcanoes of Maui and the Big Island and rushes through the gap between them. Wind speeds in the channels can average about 25 miles per hour (Beufort Wind Scale 6). At these wind speeds, foam and rough water makes it very difficult to see whales and dolphins.

Fortunately, even when you can?t see cetaceans, you can often hear them. Dolphins and whales use sound underwater for communication and predation. It is actually easier to find some species using sound than vision [C]. This is where the tugboat comes in again ? these boats are large enough to safely cross the dangerous waters of the channels, and they do it year-round. In addition, because they are going anyway ? I can just hop on with my equipment and gather data, without having to spend thousands of dollars on renting a boat big enough to cross the channels safely. They even give me a place to sleep and feed me (a big deal for a graduate student).

After I make the recordings, I can feed the cetacean sounds into a computer program, which will analyze their characteristics to give a species prediction [D]. Doing research on vessels that are used for commercial enterprise is known as using ?platforms of opportunity.? These platforms are already there, so I am taking the opportunity to use them. Other oceanic projects using platforms of opportunity has included plankton research from container ships and visual cetacean surveys from ferries, but these projects are relatively rare.

As a blonde haired, blue-eyed woman, I get a lot of paternal advice about working with the guys on the tugboat. ?Fatherly advice? is one of the more annoying aspects of being a young woman scientist. I already have a (wonderful) father, and he?s got the fatherly advice market cornered, thanks. Young women in science don?t need fatherly advice ? they need good mentors. This advice mostly consisted of warnings about how tough the tugboat crew would be. I wasn?t sure what to expect on the first trip, but I discovered that the guys are just as variable as anyone else. Yes, there?s a higher likelihood of teriyaki pig?s feet in the fridge (I tried it, seriously YUCK) than in my house. But once you get to know these guys, we actually have a lot in common. The captain of the tug I was on last week volunteers at a National Park to replant native plants. The A.B. (able-bodied sailor) raises local beef. One of the mates can?t stop showing me pictures of his dog, whose name is Princess (I swear). They?re not all angels or teddy bears, but neither are they the enemy.

I travel with the tugboats on two of their routes around the Hawaiian Islands; between Honolulu and Kauai, and between Honolulu and the Big Island. If the weather is good, I stand outside and look for cetaceans. If the weather is bad (waves are coming over the bow and splashing me ? the crew gets a kick out of this), I come into the bridge and watch as best I can. This video from last week shows how much the boat tilts during ?rough? weather:

When I get to the Big Island, I climb from the tugboat to the barge, and pull my recording equipment out of the water to download the sounds and make sure everything is working properly.

I haven?t analyzed all of my data yet. It takes a lot of time to listen to 864 hours of recordings. Regardless of what my data shows, I hope that the information can help inform research in the future. Are we missing a huge chunk of whale and dolphin activity by sticking to the nice smooth water, or is that where they hang out, anyway? I also get very excited about the idea of using platforms of opportunity on a larger scale. Commercial ships cross most of the world?s waters ? imagine if every one of those vessels was equipped with a device that listened for dolphins. Of course, that brings up another host of problems; including the fact that shipping noise stresses whales, and that many whales are killed when ships hit them.

Is it possible for a moral scientist to partner with commercial shippers that can cause this kind of harm to their study species? Fortunately, I don?t have to wrestle with that problem yet. To the best of my knowledge, none of the tugs I work on has ever hit a whale, and their traveling speed of less than 10 knots makes them less likely to hit one. I?ll cross that moral bridge once the big shipping companies let me start recording from their boats. However, my experience working with the tugboat crews has convinced me that if we don?t at least try to communicate and work together, we?ll always fail.
